Recipients and function
When writing academic texts, as in all other communication, it is important to consider who the recipients are and what your purpose with the text is.
Academic texts constitute communication between peers, that is, we can presume that the reader is as well educated and knowledgeable as the writer. Hence it is usually not necessary to explain the meaning of words and terms further than defining the terms and clarifying how you are using them.
The function of an academic text is presenting new knowledge. Regardless of text type the writer has something unique to contribute since all writers have different experiences and approaches. The aim of the paper is to present this new knowledge to an audience that has every qualification to understand it.
Texts written by students also have another important function: Showing the lecturers and examiners that the writer has acquired knowledge and understanding.
