Brief Bio

Associate Professor Yonas Zewdu Ayele holds a PhD degree, specializing on the resilience and risk assessment of infrastructures, from the UiT The Arctic University of Norway and University of Maryland, College Park, USA. During his PhD studies, he was awarded an Emerging Leaders Program scholarship from The Research Council of Norway. His research interests include: resilience assessment of critical infrastructures, (dynamic) Bayesian networks and causal modelling, smart transport systems, road network dynamics, impact assessment, risk analysis, event sequence diagrams and influence diagrams, cost-effectiveness analysis, drilling waste handling, and cold-region engineering. He is a member of ASCE - American Society of Civil Engineers, Tekna - The Norwegian Society of Graduate Technical and Scientific Professionals, and EACE - Ethiopian Association of Civil Engineers. He is also a Licensed UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) Pilot; and, a Licensed Civil Engineer specialized in designing of infrastructures (buildings, roads, highways, etc.), reinforced concrete, steel and wood structures, and retaining walls.

He is a Leader of a Research Group named “Building and Environment” at the Faculty of Engineering, ØUC. He also leads a brand new Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure (𝑅e𝑆𝐼) Lab at ØUC, aiming for conducting research to address the emerging challenges related with resilience and sustainability of infrastructure, with primary applications in critical infrastructures. He has extensive experience in conducting individual or collaborative research projects, writing publications or disseminate research findings, evaluating research outcomes, as well as developing new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding. In addition, he has been participating, leading, and administrating several projects funded by the EU Interreg and The Research Council of Norway. He has received research project grants for seven of his applications, as a Principal Investigator and Partner. These project proposals have been written with a close cooperation between more than 10 universities and, more than 50 organizations form Norway, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Russia, the UK, USA as well as Chile. He authored/co- authored more than 55 articles, including working papers, in international journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters. He is also the co- supervisor of three PhD students in Norway and, one PhD student in Sweden, as well as the main supervisor of several master’s students and, a number of bachelor students.
