With the exponential growth of data generation and computing power, we are approaching the point where an increasing proportion of the most influential computer programs are no longer written by humans, but learned by machines. Big data analytics, the technology that allows us to run machine learning algorithms at scale, is revolutionizing every industry and transforming everyone's life. The main goal of this Ph.D. project is to gain a deeper understanding of the current power grid system, its transition to the smart grid, and the role of big data analytics in the process. Besides exploring several most potential applications of machine learning and big data technology in smart grid, the thesis also includes research about the challenges encountered when deploying big data solutions for a smart grid as well as proposals for a big data analytics architecture that can tackle these challenges.
