Academic interests

English language, literature and teaching methodolgy are my most important academic interests. I have worked with the following literary topics:

  • Canadian literature (Atwood, Moodie, Duncan)
  • Modernism (Woolf)
  • Decadence literature (Barker, Wilde)
  • Great War literature (e.g., Barker, Sasson, Owen)
  • Contemporary English literature (e.g., Drabble, Weldon, Hughes, Plath, Heaney)
  • The crime genre (Weldon, Cornwell, Child, Capri)
  • Children's and young adult literature (Sheff, Burgess, Doctorow, Bertagna, Rai)

Literary didactics within English teaching,  focusing on childen's and young adult literature, is at present my most important academic interest. This is due to my teaching responsibilities within the program 'Master in Teaching Foreign Languages in School'.

I defended my PhD thesis in English literature, "Reciprocal Haunting: Pat Barker's Regeneration Trilogy", at the University of Karlstad, Sweden, in 2008. The trilogy, which was written between 1991 and 1996, focuses on the lives of soldiers and civilians in Great Britain during the Great War. (See the abstract in the list of publications below).

Courses taught

Background

Education

I arrived in Norway from the USA in 1967, but did not become a Norwegian citizen until 2015. In 1986, I completed my higher education (BA, or Cand. mag.; MA or Cand. philol.) at the University of Oslo, with the subjects English (major), Psychology, and Comparative Literature. In 2008 I completed my PhD in English literature at the University of Karlstad, Sweden.

Work experience

I worked as a teacher in lower-secondary school in the municipality of Halden from 1986-1991, and as an English teacher in upper-secondary school for adults 1990-1992. In 1992 I was employed by Østfold District College in Halden (part of Østfold University College from 1994), and I have taught English Foundation courses and English in teacher education programmes (ALU, GLU, MAGLU and KfK). In the past two years I have mainly worked within the MA program 'Master of Teaching Foreign Languages in School', which is taught in partnership with the University of Gothenburg and Linné University in Sweden.

I have also worked for Aschehoug Publishing as an author of English textbooks for upper-secondary school, and been engaged in teaching further education courses for primary, lower-secondary and upper-secondary school teachers.

As part of my research and development work I have co-edited six anthologies, and am now working as a co-editor on the seventh, which is forthcoming in 2018/2019.
