Connections to the Curriculum in English: This book provides insight into ways of living, ways of thinking and traditions of indigenous people and, hence, contributes to building students’ intercultural competence. Furthermore, it helps students develop their understanding that their views of the world are culture-dependent.

Summary: This book tells the story of Young Bull, a Cheyenne boy, who at the age of ten was taken away from his family and sent to one of the off-reservation Indian boarding schools in the United States to learn the white man’s language, culture and ways of life. The motto of the schools was “From Savagery Into Civilization”. Through Young Bull, we learn to know about the Cheyenne culture and values and how he experiences the contrasts between the white man’s way of life and the Cheyenne heritage and culture.
