Kindness Grows

Themes: Feelings, Friendship, Health and life skills

Connections to the Curriculum in English: In a very visual way, this picture book encourages conversations about feelings and perspectives on students’ own way of life and thinking and that of others.

Book coverAuthor and publisher: Britta Teckentrup, Little Tiger

Summary: This peek-through picture book centres on damaged relationships and how difficult it can be to go forward to mend broken friendships. The book uses different metaphors to make the readers see what consequences our actions may have on relationships with other people. The book touches upon different scenarios like refusing to play together, saying ugly words and refusing to share. On each double-page spread, the readers observe on the left-hand page how a crack grows throughout the book; on the contrary, the right-hand page, the crack is turned into a tree trunk and a flowering tree. This picture book helps young people to reflect on how a divide can grow between friends. The message is that healing begins with kind actions and that kindness is the way forward to nurture friendship.

Suitable for students in years: 7-10
