Teaching semester

5th semester (autumn)

Content

The following topics will be covered:

  • Fundamental concepts; gain/attenuation, noise
  • Wave propagation
  • Transmission lines: radio, cable, and fiber
  • Impedance matching, reflection, characteristic impedance, link budget
  • Standards, components, and methods for short-range radio communication
  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN)
  • Secure radio communication and coding schemes
  • Laboratory work: A simple IoT system will be constructed

The student's learning outcomes on passing the course

Knowledge

The student can:

  • provide an overview of theory and techniques for the transmission of electromagnetic signals
  • describe the physical conditions for transmission over lines (radio, optical fiber, and transmission lines)

Skills

The student:

  • understands the technical application of radio, transmission, and fiber-optic lines
  • applies techniques for the calculation of transmission lines
  • understands techniques applied in sensor networks and Personal Area Networks (PAN)

General Competence

The student has an understanding and overview of:

  • short-range radio communication techniques and their application
  • wireless techniques applied in data communication
  • techniques for wireless acquisition and transmission of measurement and control data in sensor networks
  • security aspects and vulnerabilities in their own radio communication systems and can demonstrate this

Teaching and learning methods

Instruction varies between lectures, self-study, exercises, and project work.

Independent study and project work will involve laboratory work.

A significant portion of the work is conducted in groups.

Attempts will be made to organize student presentations on relevant topics within the subject.

Workload

250-300 hours

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Contribution to a report from project work (construction of sensor and command networks with an emphasis on the radio communication within these)
  • Participation in laboratory, project, and group work, as well as any seminars, with at least 80 % attendance

Coursework requirements are graded as pass / fail. The coursework requirements must be approved before the student can sit for the exam.

Exam

Individual portfolio assessment.

The portfolio consists of five portfolio assignments. Permitted aids: All.

Grading scale: A-F.

Examiners

Internal or external assessment

Conditions for resit/rescheduled exams

In the event of a failing grade on the individual portfolio assessment, the contents of the portfolio may be revised once.

If a student wishes to improve their grade, all portfolio elements must be re-developed and re-submitted at the next ordinary examination.

A resit examination is held early in the following semester.

Course evaluation

Continuous evaluation of instruction throughout the semester, with the evaluation method agreed upon between the instructor(s) and students. Written final evaluation of the course.
