OUAS Concrete Technology Laboratory

The concrete laboratory at the Engineering Department was established in 2010 in our campus in Fredrikstad. The laboratory is part of our teaching, being hands on work, an important part of the learning process. Our laboratory is used extensively by our students in courses teaching material technology and in their bachelor and master projects. The laboratory is also used in research, involving PhD students from different disciplines working in close collaboration with our industry partners.

In our laboratory we have all the equipment needed to make both small and large concrete specimens as well as mortars. Among the instruments we have are concrete mixers, vibrating tables and curing baths.

We have also several climate chambers for storage of samples during curing and LA-machine for toughnes and abrasion resistance for aggregates.

In-house expertise on cement chemistry and functional materials:

  • We can evaluate the reactivity of cements, cement composites and other types of binders, like alkaline activated cements and geopolymers.
  • Test chemical admixture’s effect in cements and binders
  • the reactivity of new materials to be used as SCMs (Supplementary Cementitious Materials) into cements
  • Valorisation of materials from different streams into building materials

The instruments that we have available to perform those tests are:

  • Isothermal Calorimetry
  • Vicat test
  • Rheometer
  • Slump tests
  • FT-IR
  • UV-Vis Spectrometry

Mechanical tests: we can perform different types of mechanical testing at both concrete and mortarand cement levels.

  • Compressive strength
  • Flexural strength
  • Shrinkage

New 3d-printer for mortars and ceramics

We are committed to increase the competence for our students related to digital manufacturing and we have recently get in our concrete laboratory a 3d-printer for mortars and ceramics, a WASP 40100 LDM.
