Machine Learning

Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are enabling technologies for the digital society. Our group conducts both basic research to develop new methods in AI and ML, as well as apply cutting-edge methods in diverse application domains.

The Machine Learning research group at Østfold University College consists of a mix of scientific staff, master and doctoral students and external members from partners, e.g. local businesses. Our work covers the whole spectrum from basic research and theoretical work to developing practical large-scale machine learning algorithms that are widely used in industry.

We focus on the following strategic areas:

Artificial Intelligence in Bio-Health

We conduct research using clinical and molecular omics data, within the fields of bioinformatics and health informatics, with a particular focus on decision support and personalized medicine. Our applications are built upon fundamental computational research in sequential, time-series, and multi-way data analysis.

Biologically Inspired Artificial Intelligence, both basic and applied research

We have a particular focus on evolutionary computation including swarm intelligence and natural computing applied to healthcare, industrial optimization, and fake news detection. In addition, we conduct basic research in neuroAI, neural networks, and general intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence in Education

We conduct research on how artificial intelligence methods can shape the future of education. This work involves intelligent analysis, mining, and retrieval of multimodal instructional data, including text, audio, and video.

Artificial Intelligence for text recognition from different media

We have particular expertise in text recognition from diverse sources, including handwritten documents, printed text, historical documents, images, and video. This work involves the development and application of advanced computer vision techniques and zero-, one-, and few-shot learning approaches.
