  International political crises are often immensely complicated, involving many different actors communicating in different arenas and employing different formats. Legacy media and social media can fuel the crises, but crisis communicators seeking to manage them can also take advantage of such media. In this chapter, we discuss international political crisis and crisis communication using the so-called rhetorical arena model and draw on empirical examples from the war addresses and social media use of the Ukrainian President in the ongoing war with Russia.

  "Thank you. It’s because of everyone involved, all across the country, that we achieved this magnificent result. This is your victory" (VoteLeaveTakeControl, 2016). This was the message on the Vote Leave campaign website as the results from the EU referendum came in on 23 June 2016. 51.9 per cent of those who voted supported the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU). Vote Leave was a fraction in British politics that favoured leaving the European Union. Prior to the referendum, Vote Leave produced and published several campaign videos supporting Brexit. In this chapter, I will analyse four strategically chosen campaign videos from the Vote Leave campaign: Vote Leave, take back control (VoteLeave, 08.10.2015), Heroes (VoteLeave, 17.12.2015), Who do you trust? (VoteLeave, 06.03.2016) and Which NHS will you vote for (VoteLeave, 23.05.2016)? Using the six principles of Heath and Heath (Heath & Heath, 2008) I will show how the Vote Leave campaign used populist rhetoric to create a counter-alliance and successfully formed the opinion to leave the European Union. I will start by presenting the term populism as a discursive style and earlier case studies of rhetoric and discursive strategies at work prior to the Brexit referendum. Then I will present Heath & Heath’s six SUCCES criteria to make an idea stick (2008). Heath and Heath do not use this framework to analyse populist rhetoric in particular, but for this study, I will argue that the six principles can help us understand the success of the Vote Leave campaign, as well as the appealing characteristics of populist rhetoric. Finally, I will discuss how the Vote Leave campaign rhetorically created a counter-alliance as an argument to leave the European Union. The chapter also offers a table summarising all the main findings from the analysis of the four campaign videos, as well as a description of how the counter-alliance was created through a simple message, unexpected elements, concrete examples, the credibility of anti-authorities, strong emotions and nostalgic stories of Britain’s great past combined with a pessimistic vision of the future within the EU.

  We live in strange times. Old borders are vanishing just before our astonished eyes, while new ones are rapidly emerging. Nearly three decades after the publication of Francis Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man, the zeitgeist that predicted a bright future for mankind to a large extent turned out to be rather more of a dystopia. Crises in and outside Europe multiplied the number of border controls, triggered the construction of walls and fences and widened ideological gaps. The book Discussing Borders, Escaping Traps is a transdisciplinary and transspatial approach to investigating these vanishing, emerging and changing material and immaterial borders. It is the result of a two-year project by AreaS, a research group in area studies located at Østfold University College in Norway, and by partners of AreaS.

  On January 20, 2021, the United States’ 46th President Joseph Biden came into office. With the passing of power, a whole world began to believe in the return to the established order and normalcy in US Foreign policy, a world in which there existed a community of values and a genuine de facto transatlantic alliance between Northern Americans and Europeans. For many, the Trumpian period between 2016 and 2021 will remain haunted by the memory of a quasi-permanent state of panic concerning the future of transatlantic relations. As Quessard et al. pointed out, “(…) traditional allies worry about the future of their partnership with The United States and question the relevance of more autonomous postures” (2020, p. 7). The reality behind a Western alliance framework in danger of becoming more marginalized or dismantled in time was particularly clear to French president Emmanuel Macron in November 2019, who pictured the ongoing diplomatic crisis within NATO as follows: “(...) we find ourselves for the first time with an American president who doesn’t share our idea of the European project, and American policy is diverging from this project. We need to draw conclusions from the consequences (…) the ultimate guarantor, the umbrella which made Europe stronger, no longer has the same relationship with Europe. Which means that our defense, our security, elements of our sovereignty, must be re-thought” (Macron, 2019).

  Fra sladder til konspirasjon. Kunstig intelligens og falske nyheter De siste årene har debatten om falske nyheter, sosiale medier-skapte ekkokamre, netthat og ikke minst algoritmenes rolle i det hele vært sterkt til stede både i et norsk og et internasjonalt perspektiv. Det som er sikkert, er at den intensive delingen av falske nyheter fremmer konflikt på bekostning av pluralisme og utgjør en trussel for demokratiske samfunn verden over. Men hvordan kan vi motvirke denne praksisen med falske nyheter? Er løsningen å ansvarliggjøre teknologigiganter som Google, Facebook og Apple? Bidrar kunstig intelligens til desinformasjon og uro, eller kan nye teknologier tvert imot hjelpe oss med å gjenoppbygge et samfunn basert på objektiv informasjon? Institut français de Norvège har gleden av å samle et knippe deltakere med forskjellig bakgrunn og synspunkter til å reflektere rundt nettopp disse viktige temaene: Den Paris-baserte kunstneren Andrés Baron, som gjennom foto og video blant annet interesserer seg for digital transformasjon og manipulering av bilder, vil innlede debatten med en kunstnerisk refleksjon rundt temaet. Debatten fortsetter deretter med ordstyrer Elin Strand Larsen, førsteamuensis ved Høgskolen i Østfold, Marie-Laure Muchery, fondsforvalter for den ideelle organisasjonen Civitates, Bente Roalsvig, prosjektdirektør og nestleder for Fritt Ord og Johannes Langguth, forsker ved Simula Research Lab.

  Elin Strand Larsens underviser i retorikk, PR og journalistikk ved bachelorstudiet i Internasjonal kommunikasjon, Høgskolen i Østfold. Hennes doktorgradsstudie viser at et intenst medietrykk etterfulgt av politiske skandaler, oppleves svært belastende. I forbindelse med studien intervjuet hun åtte skandinaviske politikere, blant annet Gerd-Liv Valla, Åslaug Haga, Magnhild Meltveit Kleppa, som opplevde å få en massiv medieomtale på grunn av lovovertredelser eller brudd på moralske normer. Larsens doktoravhandling har tittelen «Når kvinner må si unnskyld… Medierte skandaler, kvinnelige politikere og retoriske forsvarsstrategier».

  Avhandlingens hovedtema er politiske skandaler i tre skandinaviske land, de forsvarsstrategiene som politikere benytter, samt hvordan kvinnelige politikere opplever skandaliseringen. Forfatteren har valgt å studere skandaler der kvinnelige toppolitikere har vært i stormens øye. Først og fremst skyldes det at kvinner i politiske skandaler er et mindre utforsket område. Skandalestudiene i vår del av verden gjelder i første rekke menn. Studien inkluderer imidlertid også skandaler der både kvinnelige og mannlige politikere har vært involvert, noe som gjør det mulig med en mer direkte sammenlignende studie av hvor mye eller lite kjønnsdimensjonen betyr. I denne avhandlingen undersøker Hornnes hvordan kvinnelige politikere opplever og forsvarer seg retorisk i politiske skandaler. Hun har gjennom dette arbeidet blant annet intervjuet åtte kvinnelige politikere involvert i politiske skandaler i Skandinavia mellom 1978 og 2010 – Gerd-Liv Valla, Åslaug Haga, Magnhild Meltveit Kleppa, Gudrun Schyman, Wanja Lundby-Wedin, Cecilia Stegö Chilò, Ritt Bjerregaard og Karen Ellemann – og spurt de om hvordan de opplevde mediedrevet, deres retoriske forsvar og betydningen av kjønn i skandaliseringsprosessen
