CAS is the Norwegian Academy’s center for excellent, curiosity-driven research. The center’s mission is to promote outstanding, fundamental, and curiosity-driven research within and across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. By providing researchers with uninterrupted time for research in an exclusive working environment, along with extensive administrative support, the center facilitates groundbreaking scientific results.
The center regularly announces calls for funding for research projects involving international research teams. Being awarded CAS funding is highly prestigious, career promoting and contributes to advancing important research agendas for the benefit of society, with a clear emphasis on basic research.
CAS offers several funding schemes. The CAS Research Grant and the Young CAS Grant are announced annually, and there are also other calls. https://cas-nor.no/calls-for-applications
Important to know
It is important to note that CAS does not fund research time for our own researchers (only for international collaborators); it is HiØ as an institution that may choose to support applicants through buy-out of time. Therefore, any application MUST be anchored in the management line, and the procedure for applying for a CAS grant must follow the process described in Retningslinjer for HiØ-ansatte som søker om midler fra CAS Senter for grunnforskning and any intentions of applying must be registered in Nettskjema (also used to register intentions of applying for research funding).
CAS funds only basic research projects. This means that the project must contribute to advancing the state of the art at the research frontier. Applications will be internally assessed to determine whether the level of scientific excellence is high enough to fit within CAS.
For the CAS Research Grant, the scientific CV of the Principal Investigators (PIs) is given significant weight. For the Young CAS Grant, the CV carries less weight, and the quality of the project is correspondingly more important.
