What promotes learning in challenging bioscience subjects? The BIOLEARN project investigates learning strategies in physiology, motivation for learning physiology, and student perspectives on effective teaching in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry – across programs and institutions – to generate knowledge that can strengthen teaching practices in health professions education.

About the project

Bioscience subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry are taught early in health professions education and are often perceived as challenging. Students must manage a large volume of complex concepts, which can affect both motivation and deep learning.

The BIOLEARN project examines factors influencing learning in bioscience, including study habits, motivation, and perceived learning outcomes, across programs at Østfold University College (nursing, social education, and biomedical laboratory science). The research design combines quantitative and qualitative approaches.

BIOLEARN also includes a national, multi-institutional study exploring nursing students’ perspectives on effective teaching in bioscience.

The study aims to provide knowledge about factors that promote effective teaching and support the development of learning-enhancing practices across programs and institutions. This insight will help strengthen students’ understanding and mastery of bioscience—a foundation for safe, knowledge-based professional practice.
