Om prosjektet

We were given the task to create a Virtual Reality experience. The medium we decided to chose was a VR game.

The focus was on how the emotions the game invokes can lead to increased immersion and in turn a stronger experience.

The most impactful way to test this was through boss fights, which is the high point in most games.

Different mechanics invoke different emotions, both negative and positive. We wanted to know which ones give the best immersion and how best to combat player fatigue by avoiding excess of any singular emotion.

Our Game

Host Remains consists of two main parts: An dialogue heavy investigation section, where focus is on environmental detail and small delicate object interaction. Successfully navigating through the investigation parts leads you to the boss fight section. The boss fights use thematic puzzle mechanics, with focus on spectacle. The boss fights is the area where we want indulge the most feelings from the player, where the investigation section works as a reset to reduce player fatigue.

Setting and story

You play as a 13th century priest working as an exorcist. Taking inspiration from the occult you cure your patients by freeing them from demonic possessions. Performing a ritual to bring out the demon and then joining the patient mindscape to defeat the demon in a boss fight. Successfully defeating the boss cures the patient and furthers the narrative of the game. The graphic style of the game was inspired by Playstation 2 horror games, with their retro lower fidelity look. The setting was inspired by christian demonology and witch trails.

The Result

The result of our project is the demo we're presenting today, where the first full boss fight is playable
