  In the field of brain monitoring, the advancement of more user-friendly wearable and non-invasive devices is introducing new opportunities for application outside the lab and clinical use. Despite the growing importance of responsible innovation, there remains a knowledge gap in addressing the possible impacts of wearable non-invasive brain monitoring technology on mental health and well-being. Addressing this, our main aim was to study the use of speculative design scenarios as a method to describe potential value dilemmas associated with this new technology. Through a qualitative study, we invited participants to engage in discussions regarding three variations of wearable non-invasive brain monitoring technology presented in speculative video scenarios. The study's findings describe how the discussions contribute towards promoting heuristics that can help foster more responsible innovation by identifying norms and value dilemmas through inclusive speculative design practices. This qualitative case study contributes to the literature on responsible innovation by demonstrating how responsible innovation frameworks can benefit from incorporating anticipatory speculative design methods aimed at early identification of potential value dilemmas.

  Abstract Background: Citizen involvement is important for ensuring the relevance and quality of many research and innovation efforts. Literature shows that inadequate citizen involvement poses an obstacle during the research, development, and implementation of assistive technology. Previous studies have addressed the advantages and disadvantages of citizen engagement in health research and technology development, and there is concern about how to ensure valuable engagement to avoid situations where they don’t have influence. Frail older adults are often excluded from being active partners in research projects. The overall objective of this commentary is to describe a case where dialogue cafés was used as a method for involving assisted living residents in technology discussions, elaborating on the following research question: In what ways are dialogue cafés useful for directing research and development and for engaging residents in assisted living facilities in assistive technology discussions? Method: Six dialogue cafés with assisted living residents as participants were carried out over a period of 3 years (2016–19). Reports that were written after each café by the group leaders and rapporteurs provide the material for the analyses in this paper. Results: This study demonstrates an example of facilitating user involvement where the participants felt useful by contributing to research and discussions on assistive technology and where this contribution in fact directed the research and development in the overall Assisted Living Project. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that dialogue cafés enable older residents at an assisted living facility to contribute with opinions about their needs and perspectives on assistive technologies. This negates the view of older adults as too frail to participate and demonstrates the importance of including and collaborating with older adults in research.

  ntroduction: The western world is seeking increased implementation of assistive technology (AT) to meet the challenges of an ageing population. The objective of this study is to explore perspectives on AT use among home-dwelling older adults with or without cognitive impairment. Methods: This study combines findings from a cross-sectional study with a questionnaire package (n = 83) and from qualitative individual interviews (n = 7) and is part of a larger study, the Assisted Living Project. Combining methods promotes complementary inquiries into a phenomenon. Results: The participants already use ATs: TVs, social alarms, mobile phones, stove timers, electronic medical dispensers, PCs and tablet computers. They were both optimistic and skeptical of AT, and expressed different perspectives and expressed different perspectives on ATs in relation to usability, privacy and fear of losing personal face-to-face care. Conclusions: This study reveals that older adults' perspectives on AT are multifaceted and complex, and can partly be explained by the interacting factors in the HAAT model: person, technology, environment, and context. Further exploration in relation to older adults with health challenges, as well as ethical perspectives on AT implementation, is required for this group. Trial registration number: The Norwegian Research Council, Number 47996, funds the Assisted Living Project (ALP).IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe study was useful in order to inform the health care services about older adults "perspectives on assistive technology".This study reveals the complexity of understanding perspectives towards and the use of assistive technology among older adults with or without cognitive impairment.This study contributes to the understanding of the interactions between the four components: humans, activities, technology and the context.

  This article presents an analysis of a project in the field of assisted living technologies (ALT) for older adults where Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is used as an overall approach to the research and technology development work. Taking the project's three literature reviews - conducted in the fields of health science oriented towards occupational therapy, ICT research and development, and RRI - as starting points it applies perspectives from institutional logics to analyse the tension between RRI as an overall research and innovation (R&I) logic versus a disciplinary logic. This tension complicates the implementation of RRI, and we argue for giving this question more visibility. The article concludes that this project, from the funder's side and the project leader's side, was intended to be an example of research and technology development carried out within a new RRI R&I logic, but that it in large parts was conducted as a multidisciplinary project with RRI as a quasi-disciplinary logic in part in parallel with and in part in conflict with other logics in the project.

  Emerging science and technologies are often characterised by complexity, uncertainty and controversy. Regulation and governance of such scientific and technological developments needs to build on knowledge and evidence that reflect this complicated situation. This insight is sometimes formulated as a call for integrated assessment of emerging science and technologies, and such a call is analysed in this article. The article addresses two overall questions. The first is: to what extent are emerging science and technologies currently assessed in an integrated way. The second is: if there appears to be a need for further integration, what should such integration consist in? In the article we briefly outline the pedigree of the term ‘integrated assessment’ and present a number of interpretations of the concept that are useful for informing current analyses and discussions of integration in assessment. Based on four case studies of assessment of emerging science and technologies, studies of assessment traditions, literature analysis and dialogues with assessment professionals, currently under-developed integration dimensions are identified. It is suggested how these dimensions can be addressed in a practical approach to assessment where representatives of different assessment communities and stakeholders are involved. We call this approach the Trans Domain Technology Evaluation Process (TranSTEP).

  Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is a currently important proposal for doing science and innovation with and for society. Sustainability has for the last 30 years had a similar function in providing limits and direction for societal activities, including science and innovation. In this discussion paper, we ask what RRI can learn from sustainability and how RRI and sustainability can strengthen each other, focusing especially on social sustainability. We suggest that the social life cycle approach of the United Nations Environmental Programme and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry may address the product aspect of RRI, provide resources for governance in the face of the problem of anticipation, facilitate a useful value-chain approach and offer several other benefits in an RRI perspective. Conversely, we show that RRI can complement sustainability models by more specifically addressing the responsibilities of the different actors involved in the research, innovation and marketing process.

  The presence of experts holding patents and simultaneously providing policy advice on areas where they hold patents pose several normative questions. Through a comparative study of several IPCC reports, this article documents the scope of this phenomenon and discusses it with respect to a theory of conflict of interest. Seemingly, it is more likely to be patent-holders on issues of infrastructures, industry and transport rather than for single technologies as such. According to insights from studies on conflict of interest, there is an increased risk for bias. The article investigates the possible relations between patenting and conflicts of interest according to theoretical and empirical insights from the relation between science and society.

  This book offers the policy-maker or decision-maker key insights and practical information regarding the features of ethics frameworks best suited to the ethical assessment of human cognitive enhancement (HCE) applications, such as pharmaceutical cognitive enhancers and noninvasive brain stimulation techniques. This book takes as its departure point the entrenched philosophical debate between opponents and proponents of HCE and the increased feasibility of some applications of HCE. Recent calls for policy-making in the area of human enhancement reflect the need to find a balance between addressing current ethical issues and issues that are more speculative in nature or are underpinned by abstract philosophical concepts. Practical ethical approaches for policy or decision-making should enable the development of an evidence base for the risks and benefits of HCE applications. Moreover, such practical approaches should also incorporate a broader range of value bases that would facilitate convergence regarding certain decisions and judgements. This book identifies and evaluate tools that help us to go beyond polarised philosophical debates in order to assist practical decision makers in concrete ethical deliberation and decision-making. The focus is on systematic methods with which to identify relevant ethical values and assess the impacts of an HCE application on those values in order to facilitate decision-making regarding the ethical acceptability or desirability of the application.

  The year by year translation into English of now the first four of Karl Ove Knausgaard’s virtuosic six-volume novel, Min Kamp (My Struggle), has become something of a slow-gathering storm. Ambiguously figured as “autobiographical” by some, the volumes present an absorbing, even gripping, first person narrative of the life of a Norwegian writer living in Stockholm today, an Everyman of sorts, one with the same name as the author. In its expansiveness, its textures, even in its anti-romanticism, Knausgaard’s is a world at once fully disillusioned and yet thoroughly enchanted. The yield is a weird sort of hieroglyph. It is not full of meaning per se, but—as confession, meditation, psychological self-portrait, and indeed, as ethnography—Knausgaard’s world is certainly full. It presents an irresistible occasion for reflecting on the secular as religion. This is a closed reading group. Public programming based on its work will follow in the coming year.

  AFI har, i samarbeid med Storbyprogrammet (HiOA) og arkitektfirmaet Snøhetta, gjennomført en bred sosiokulturell stedsanalyse av Tøyen på oppdrag for Oslo kommune ved Bydel Gamle Oslo. Oppdraget var å kartlegge og analysere demografiske, sosiokulturelle og fysiske aspekter ved Tøyen der disse dimensjonene sees i sammenheng. Stedsanalysen skal gi svar på tre problemstillinger: Hvordan er befolkningen på Tøyen sammensatt, og hvordan endres den? Hvilke sosiale og fysiske nærmiljøkvaliteter brukes og verdsettes? Hva sav-ner befolkningen av tilbud og tjenester, og hva er de største utfordringene ved området? Stedsana-lysen er basert på to overordnede metodiske grep: Vi har undersøkt demografien og levekårene i området ved hjelp av kvantitative analyser og vi har gjort et omfattende feltarbeid med dybdein-tervjuer, workshoper og observasjoner i dagliglivet. Befolkningen på Tøyen er mangfoldig langs mange dimensjoner. Området har stor utskifting av beboere, og bærer preg av å være et transittområde for mange. Én av tre er på flyttefot hvert år, og det er særlig majoritetsnorske barn i skolealder og deres foreldre i 30-40-årene som flytter ut, mens unge voksne i 20-årene flytter inn. Befolkningen er polarisert når det gjelder levekår og so-sioøkonomiske forhold, og forskjellene mellom gruppene øker. For å styrke nærmiljøet foreslår vi tiltak som bidrar til å utvikle møteplasser og uterom, bekjempe fattigdom og kriminalitet, bedre boforhold og bomiljø, samt styrke engasjement, aktivisme og frivil-lighet.
