  Vurdering av etikk i de to fagene KRLE og religion og etikk er et lite diskutert tema og mangler en uttalt forankring i fagfilosofien. Med utgangspunkt i LK20s retningslinjer for vurdering, argumenterer artikkelen for at Bernard Williams’ to argumentative dyder – nøyaktighet og oppriktighet – bør utgjøre grunnlaget for vurdering av etikk i skolefagene, i tillegg til elevenes ferdigheter i teorier og fagbegreper. Artikkelen avsluttes med noen praktiske eksempler på hvordan nøyaktighet og oppriktighet kan bidra til å artikulere utfordringer knyttet til vurdering.

  Dette kapittelet presenterer et undervisningsopplegg for kristendom, religion, livssyn og etikk (KRLE) på ungdomstrinnet, men med enkle tilpasninger kan det også brukes på mellomtrinnet og for studiespesialiserende på videregående skole i religion og etikk. På ungdomstrinnet kan det gjerne kombineres med mat og helse, naturfag og/eller samfunnsfag for å dykke dypere ned i matproduksjon. Hensikten med opplegget er på den ene siden å få elevene til å diskutere etikken ved moderne, industriell matproduksjon og på den andre siden å formidle og kritisk vurdere hvordan chatboter produserer bestemte og systematiske mønstre når den genererer bilder.

  Background: Families with children who need pediatric palliative care (PPC) often stay at home to preserve a sense of normalcy. However, families may experience challenges regarding communication and follow-up from health care professionals (HCPs). Health technology is suggested as a way to facilitate communication between families and HCPs, but no previous scoping review has mapped existing studies on health and communication technologies and infrastructures for supporting children who need PPC and their families. Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to systematically map the literature on health technologies and infrastructures to support communication in home-based PPC. Methods: We conducted a scoping review based on Arksey and O’Malley’s framework with a systematic search for relevant publications in the ASSIA, CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science databases in November 2023, updated on August 28, 2025. Eligible publications comprised children (aged 0-18 years) with life-limiting or life-threating conditions requiring PPC and their families; HCPs, social care workers, or teachers caring for children in need of PPC and using any health technologies and infrastructures to support 2-way communication in home-based care; and literature published between January 1, 2018, and August 28, 2025, in Danish, English, Norwegian, or Swedish. Pairs of authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data, which were summarized using a descriptive approach. Results: This review included 41 publications: 20 empirical papers, 6 protocol papers, 7 abstracts, 3 brief publications, 2 review papers, and 3 case publications. In 29.3% (12/41) of the publications, the researchers applied user-centered phased-design approaches to develop health technology for PPC. Children with cancer were most often studied in the publications. The most frequent delivery of health technology for communication in home-based PPC combined asynchronous and synchronous modes (19/41, 46.3%). Furthermore, the most frequent health technology apps for communication in home-based care were symptom monitoring apps (15/41, 36.6%), video technology (8/41, 19.5%), and health monitoring and video technology (3/41, 7.3%). Smartphones (14/41, 36.6%), internet and Wi-Fi (12/41, 29.3%), computers or laptops (9/41, 22%), and tablets (9/41, 22%) were the most frequently reported infrastructures. Conclusions: Children with cancer and their families are the most frequently reported users of health technology for communicating with HCPs in home-based PPC. However, research on children with diagnoses other than cancer and their families is limited. Combining asynchronous and synchronous modes is the most frequent way to deliver health technology, and children and their families often communicate with HCPs using symptom monitoring apps. Reports of health technology infrastructure for home-based PPC were insufficiently accounted for. Future studies should strive to include the voices of children in the development of health technology to align more closely with their needs.   Attempts to steer research, innovation and business in desirable directions have failed to meet expectations. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and responsible research and innovation (RRI) seem to be losing ground, while the challenges they sought to address remain. Despite their shortcomings, these concepts remind us of the need to take responsibility for what we as researchers and entrepreneurs bring into the world, and to keep questioning the given framework. Drawing from the experience of the AFINO project, a unique attempt to bring together RRI and CSR and to promote networks, learning and skills building in Norway, this book contextualises and explores the practical challenges of actualising responsible practices even in the propitious Norwegian context.   Background Home-based health technologies for paediatric palliative care have great potential to improve care for children, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and health systems. However, no systematic reviews have directly addressed the intersections among the ethical, legal, and social aspects of these technologies for paediatric palliative care. The objective of this systematic review was to identify and analyse the ethical, legal, and social aspects of health technologies for home-based paediatric palliative care. Methods We have conducted a systematic review, inspired by the framework suggested by McCullough. We registered the review protocol in PROSPERO (CRD42024496034) and conducted a systematic search in six databases (ASSIA, Cinahl, Embase, Medline, PsycInfo, and Web of Science) on 27 November 2023 to identify relevant studies. Pairs of authors independently assessed the eligibility of the studies and extracted data. The eligible studies employed a range of different methods from randomised controlled trials to usability studies. We then synthesised the data according to the ethical, legal and social aspects of the technologies. Results Overall, our search resulted in 9,545 reports, which were screened after deduplication. The quality of the reports was assessed according to being published in peer reviewed journals. Fifteen reports were included, which showed that the main ethical issues are harm reduction, improved services, agency and autonomy, trust and empowerment. The main legal aspects are privacy equal access to care, participation in decisions and standardisation. The main social issues are cost reduction, transformation of family relations and novel modes of communication. Health technologies have the potential to alleviate burdens and improve the quality of care for children in paediatric palliative care and their families, but they also create novel burdens through constant reporting requirements and the vulnerability of some health technologies to technological malfunction. Nevertheless, they can increase family inclusion and children’s autonomy and participation, thus empowering children, particularly through co-development of solutions. Furthermore, studies have indicated that health technologies themselves may have positive effects on children’s health. The legal aspects of health technologies pertain to privacy and control over one’s health information and equitable access to care and participation in care, while social issues can potentially reduce costs for health systems but also involve novel costs. Conclusion The reviewed studies concerning the co-development of health technologies reported increased benefits in terms of health, agency, well-being, and strengthened children’s rights in home-based paediatric palliative care. However, the social dimensions of such technologies can lead to both public savings and reconfiguration of family constellations. We recommend that future researchers consider privacy, the formal dimensions of apps and smartphones, and their impacts on families. PROSPERO reference CRD42024496034.

  In the field of brain monitoring, the advancement of more user-friendly wearable and non-invasive devices is introducing new opportunities for application outside the lab and clinical use. Despite the growing importance of responsible innovation, there remains a knowledge gap in addressing the possible impacts of wearable non-invasive brain monitoring technology on mental health and well-being. Addressing this, our main aim was to study the use of speculative design scenarios as a method to describe potential value dilemmas associated with this new technology. Through a qualitative study, we invited participants to engage in discussions regarding three variations of wearable non-invasive brain monitoring technology presented in speculative video scenarios. The study's findings describe how the discussions contribute towards promoting heuristics that can help foster more responsible innovation by identifying norms and value dilemmas through inclusive speculative design practices. This qualitative case study contributes to the literature on responsible innovation by demonstrating how responsible innovation frameworks can benefit from incorporating anticipatory speculative design methods aimed at early identification of potential value dilemmas.

  Developments in cultured meat promise transformative societal and environmental impacts through remaking animals in the bioreactor. However, in contrast to many emerging technologies, the innovation niche of cultured meat is almost entirely sustained through private venture capital investment. The financial infrastructure of Silicon Valley, and its constantly shifting frontiers of hype and financial speculation is the foundation upon which cultured meat — as a product and as a vision — is based. In this paper we seek to reflect on the consequences of these financial dynamics for examining emerging technologies and future promissory discourses. Specially, we note how this financial context lends credibility to start-up founders and their future visions, who achieve legitimacy as the result of an entirely transactional arrangement: securing investment. It produces promissory narratives that are fabricated, from the start, to appeal to a set of private investors and financial interests. Equally, there are major incentives to deceive, in terms of technical possibilities, moral progress, and societal prospects, to sustain an illusion of imminent breakthrough and lucrative investment returns. The danger for futures analysis is in reifying promissory discourses that are inseparable from their ability to function convincingly as an investment pitch. In turn telling us little about possible socio-material futures because investment dynamics drive trajectories towards realising financial returns not promised social and ethical outcomes. There is a pressing need to involve voices beyond those of advocates and other immediately interested parties, and to develop critical and alternative narratives around these technologies. Otherwise, our own academic incentives to produce novel research creates the risk that scholarship becomes trapped in chasing only what is presently attractive within dynamics of financial speculation on innovations.

  This paper examines the role of education in addressing global challenges related to sustainable development through the lens of the agrifood system. We report on the development and testing of a flexible educational approach aimed at engaging primary school pupils in Wales and teacher students in Norway in the complexities of sustainable and ethical food production. Utilizing different protein sources, such as plant-based products, edible insects, and laboratory-grown meat, this study highlights the effectiveness of using specific food items to facilitate the understanding of broader sustainability challenges and demonstrates how such educational methods can foster a sense of agency among young people, enabling them to make informed food choices and engage with ethical dilemmas. The findings suggest that this pedagogical approach can be a viable means to achieve educational goals related to citizenship, participation, and sustainability, while also raising concerns about the normalization of fast-food culture and utilitarian ethics. Further research is recommended to explore the integration of more diverse ethical frameworks and the expansion of the approach to include other food types and educational settings.

  This article analyzes a current exhibition, Climate for Change, which opened at the Norwegian Petroleum Museum in 2019. By engaging with the way in which the exhibition constructs a “we,” the article proceeds to examine how agency for mitigation is presented and analyzed. It assesses how futures are created and what types of futures emerge. These themes are addressed with reference to insights from museum research and energy humanities. The choices in the exhibition point toward a traditional understanding of continuities, of agency, and of future visions while tending toward a reduction of Norwegian accountability for climate change.

  Abstract Background: Citizen involvement is important for ensuring the relevance and quality of many research and innovation efforts. Literature shows that inadequate citizen involvement poses an obstacle during the research, development, and implementation of assistive technology. Previous studies have addressed the advantages and disadvantages of citizen engagement in health research and technology development, and there is concern about how to ensure valuable engagement to avoid situations where they don’t have influence. Frail older adults are often excluded from being active partners in research projects. The overall objective of this commentary is to describe a case where dialogue cafés was used as a method for involving assisted living residents in technology discussions, elaborating on the following research question: In what ways are dialogue cafés useful for directing research and development and for engaging residents in assisted living facilities in assistive technology discussions? Method: Six dialogue cafés with assisted living residents as participants were carried out over a period of 3 years (2016–19). Reports that were written after each café by the group leaders and rapporteurs provide the material for the analyses in this paper. Results: This study demonstrates an example of facilitating user involvement where the participants felt useful by contributing to research and discussions on assistive technology and where this contribution in fact directed the research and development in the overall Assisted Living Project. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that dialogue cafés enable older residents at an assisted living facility to contribute with opinions about their needs and perspectives on assistive technologies. This negates the view of older adults as too frail to participate and demonstrates the importance of including and collaborating with older adults in research.

  Through extensive fieldwork conducted in an inner city neighbourhood in Oslo, Norway, the authors found that a variation of actors and settings evoked different religious and secular images of place. In what ways is the urban experience shaping or challenging the religious sense of spatial belonging, and why is a secular discourse dominating the scene? In order to obtain such images and sense of place in the context of a recently established area based initiative, we interviewed representatives for the religious communities localized in the neighbourhoods of Tøyen and Grønland. Here we encountered no religiously infused language despite a sizeable spatial religious presence. In the sciences of religion, the view of a separation between the secular and the religious as a social fact and a social norm in modern societies dominates. We argue that there is a privatization of religion (Casanova 1994) within the larger discourse of urban renewal and gentrification. Simultaneously we find the reverse of Taylor’s (2007) proposal of the emptying of religion in social space: namely a filling up of religion in social spaces, that we label ‘urban religious belonging’. This article provides further empirically based knowledge into the connection of religion, secularism and the urban sphere, the difference between belief and representations or discourses, as well as a methodological approach for studying these connections and fractures.

  ntroduction: The western world is seeking increased implementation of assistive technology (AT) to meet the challenges of an ageing population. The objective of this study is to explore perspectives on AT use among home-dwelling older adults with or without cognitive impairment. Methods: This study combines findings from a cross-sectional study with a questionnaire package (n = 83) and from qualitative individual interviews (n = 7) and is part of a larger study, the Assisted Living Project. Combining methods promotes complementary inquiries into a phenomenon. Results: The participants already use ATs: TVs, social alarms, mobile phones, stove timers, electronic medical dispensers, PCs and tablet computers. They were both optimistic and skeptical of AT, and expressed different perspectives and expressed different perspectives on ATs in relation to usability, privacy and fear of losing personal face-to-face care. Conclusions: This study reveals that older adults' perspectives on AT are multifaceted and complex, and can partly be explained by the interacting factors in the HAAT model: person, technology, environment, and context. Further exploration in relation to older adults with health challenges, as well as ethical perspectives on AT implementation, is required for this group.   Purpose: Assistive technologies and digitalization of services are promoted through health policy as key means to manage community care obligations efficiently, and to enable older community care recipients With mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia (D) to remain at home for longer. The overall aim of this paper is to explore how community Health care workers enacted current policy on technology with home-dwelling citizens with MCI/D. Participants and Methods: Twenty-four community health care workers participated in one of five Focus Group discussions that explored their experiences and current practices with technologies for citizens with MCI/D. Five researchers took part in the focus groups, while six researchers collaboratively conducted an inductive, thematic analysis according to Braun & Clarke. Results: Two main themes with sub-themes were identified: 1) Current and future potentials of technology; i) frequently used technology, ii) cost-effectiveness and iii) “be there” for social contact and 2) Barriers to implement technologies; i) unsystematic approaches and contested responsibility, ii) knowledge and training and iii) technology in relation to userfriendliness and citizen capacities. Conclusion: This study revealed the complexity of implementing policy aims regarding technology provision for citizens with MCI/D. By use of Lipsky’s theory on street-level bureaucracy, we shed light on how community health care workers were situated between policies and the everyday lives of citizens with MCI/D, and how their perceived lack of knowledge and practical experiences influenced their exercise of professional discretion in enacting policy on technology in community health care services. Overall, addressing systematic technology approaches was not part of routine care, which may contribute to inequities in provision of technologies to enhance occupational possibilities and meaningful activities in everyday lives of citizens with MCI/D.

  This article presents an analysis of a project in the field of assisted living technologies (ALT) for older adults where Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is used as an overall approach to the research and technology development work. Taking the project's three literature reviews - conducted in the fields of health science oriented towards occupational therapy, ICT research and development, and RRI - as starting points it applies perspectives from institutional logics to analyse the tension between RRI as an overall research and innovation (R&I) logic versus a disciplinary logic. This tension complicates the implementation of RRI, and we argue for giving this question more visibility. The article concludes that this project, from the funder's side and the project leader's side, was intended to be an example of research and technology development carried out within a new RRI R&I logic, but that it in large parts was conducted as a multidisciplinary project with RRI as a quasi-disciplinary logic in part in parallel with and in part in conflict with other logics in the project.

  This article is a contribution to the reflection upon what forms of assistive technologies societies should provide to users of home-based services. The material is collected from five focus group interviews conducted in Oslo in 2016 as part of a research project into assistive technologies with the purpose to gain knowledge of how such technologies were used in the home-based services. The interviews are analyzed on the basis of Martha Nussbaum’s capability approach in order to see what forms of technologies influenced the users’ capabilities. Thereafter, the technologies are classified as either public or private technologies in order to see what forms of capabilities the public care for and which technologies that are in the domain of private initiative. Based on the focus groups, it seems that public technologies are targeted at bodily health and integrity, while private technologies on communication and infrastructure, with some notable exceptions. The paper ends with discussions on the seemingly paradoxical situation that publicly supported technologies aim at the private sphere while the privately acquired technologies focus on public activities.

  The approach to innovations known as Responsible research and innovation (RRI) aims to move the innovation system towards creating products that strive to realize social values along with economic benefits. This paper discusses the systematic assessment of assistive technologies in order for them to meet the aims expressed in RRI. A central issue in the discussion is how to facilitate an integration of insights from the discourse on RRI with more established assessment approaches such as Health Technology Assessment (HTA). Based on the literature on existing socio-ethical assessment tools, I investigate how these tools can be combined with HTA and how they can add perspectives from RRI that might increase the socio-ethical value of assistive technologies. Through a discussion on how to understand RRI, HTA, assessment and integration, I suggest a list of four possible approaches that have the potential to be applied as assessment approaches that integrate insights from RRI and HTA. These are then evaluated on their ability to address issues that have emerged from a literature review on RRI and assistive technologies, on empirical studies in this technology field and on their product focus. In conclusion, I argue that the Ethical Impact Assessment, the Socratic approach, the Ethical Matrix, and the HTA Core Model seem to be the most promising methodologies, but that these need adjustments to cover substantive themes from RRI.

  Assessments of novel assistive technologies for use in home-based services has been documented to be performed in a variety of ways and often with a rather narrow focus on safety and effect or effectiveness. In order better to understand the place for wider forms of assessments of assistive technologies, the current study presents a combination of the Ethical Matrix and the Socratic approach for assessment of health technologies—the Ethical HTA Matrix. This matrix was filled with content based on a case of a GPS localization system, which was validated by stakeholders. In a next step, central decision-makers in assistive technologies and stakeholders were interviewed concerning their views on this methodology. Mainly, the matrix was seen as very comprehensive, but too detailed with an abundance of information. Nevertheless, some informants suggested concrete uses of the matrix in their organizations. Some understood the matrix more as an epistemic tool aiming at providing an overview of the state of knowledge, while others identified a normative potential in the matrix that could be implemented in health innovation processes for the home-based services, in particular when discussing novel solutions and working methods with health professionals and care workers.

  The transdisciplinary Assisted Living project conducts research within (ICT), health science, social science and ethics. The overall aim of the project is to advance responsible research and innovation (RRI) in the field of welfare technology. By adapting an RRI framework, the project aims to: (a) map how stakeholders and experts perceive the state-of-the-art of responsible welfare technologies, focusing on assisted living technologies (ALT), in Norway and internationally; (b) develop ALT solutions for users with mild cognitive impairment and dementia (MCI/D), through an RRI approach; (c) judge by an integrated HTA approach whether technologies introduced through an RRI process score better than currently implemented technologies; and d) create a wider dialogue on responsible welfare technologies for the future, reflecting on alternatives and options. In the project RRI is operationalized as involving four dimensions: (i) A specific focus on addressing significant societal needs and challenges, (ii) A research and development process that actively engages and responds to a range of stakeholders, (iii) A concerted effort to anticipate potential problems, identify alternatives, and reflect on underlying values, and (iv) A willingness from relevant actors to act and adapt according to 1–3. These dimensions are built into the project’s design in different ways. The project, funded by the Research Council of Norway, started December 2015 and we have by now had substantial experience with working with these dimensions in practice. This paper will describe the experiences with including needs assessment, engagement, anticipation, reflection and responsiveness in the project, after 1.5 years operation. The paper will highlight several challenges that have appeared in the project when doing RRI in practice, related to transdisciplinarity, communication, project planning and control, and quality. We believe that the challenges experienced in our project are typical of RRI projects, so it is important to create open discussions about the pros and cons of RRI projects in the community of RRI practitioners.

  In the field of assisted living technologies, one central strand is to investigate how smart homes might fulfill ambitions for older adults to live longer at home.   Responsible research and innovation (RRI) seeks to expand the governance of innovations through including social values and beneficial impacts throughout the innovation process. This chapter presents an attempt at addressing how to use insights from RRI in establishing a method for assessment of assisted living technologies. In a current research project, we aim to compare assisted living products developed through an RRI process with such products developed through a different approach. I argue that product assessment is a central part of responsible research and innovation, albeit a less developed part than the procedural dimension of RRI. Based on the literature of assisted living technologies and socio-ethical issues and on a range of stakeholder engagement activities in the research project, I document substantive values and themes that should to be included in an RRI assessment of assisted living technologies . These themes and values are systematised with the aim of aiding in selecting a product assessment methodology.

  Emerging science and technologies are often characterised by complexity, uncertainty and controversy. Regulation and governance of such scientific and technological developments needs to build on knowledge and evidence that reflect this complicated situation. This insight is sometimes formulated as a call for integrated assessment of emerging science and technologies, and such a call is analysed in this article. The article addresses two overall questions. The first is: to what extent are emerging science and technologies currently assessed in an integrated way. The second is: if there appears to be a need for further integration, what should such integration consist in? In the article we briefly outline the pedigree of the term ‘integrated assessment’ and present a number of interpretations of the concept that are useful for informing current analyses and discussions of integration in assessment. Based on four case studies of assessment of emerging science and technologies, studies of assessment traditions, literature analysis and dialogues with assessment professionals, currently under-developed integration dimensions are identified. It is suggested how these dimensions can be addressed in a practical approach to assessment where representatives of different assessment communities and stakeholders are involved. We call this approach the Trans Domain Technology Evaluation Process (TranSTEP).

  This paper presents results from a study of Czech Local Action Groups (LAGs), focusing on gaining knowledge about their internally perceived legitimacy and their potential role in local adaptation to climate change. Former studies on the role of governance networks in climate change adaptation have suggested that these networks’ legitimacy are crucial for their success. In this article we provide an analytical framework that can be used to address different aspects of local governance networks which are imp ortant for their legitimacy and the way they are apt as instruments for climate change adaptation actions. We also present a survey among LAG members that provide empirical data that we discuss in the article. The framework and the data are discussed with reference to existing contributions in the intersection of legitimacy, governance networks and climate change adaptation. A specific aim is to provide research based recommendations for further improving LAGs as an adaptation instrument. In addition, knowl edge is generated that will be interesting for further studies of similar local governance initiatives in the climate change adaptation context.

  Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is a currently important proposal for doing science and innovation with and for society. Sustainability has for the last 30 years had a similar function in providing limits and direction for societal activities, including science and innovation. In this discussion paper, we ask what RRI can learn from sustainability and how RRI and sustainability can strengthen each other, focusing especially on social sustainability. We suggest that the social life cycle approach of the United Nations Environmental Programme and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry may address the product aspect of RRI, provide resources for governance in the face of the problem of anticipation, facilitate a useful value-chain approach and offer several other benefits in an RRI perspective. Conversely, we show that RRI can complement sustainability models by more specifically addressing the responsibilities of the different actors involved in the research, innovation and marketing process.

  The presence of experts holding patents and simultaneously providing policy advice on areas where they hold patents pose several normative questions. Through a comparative study of several IPCC reports, this article documents the scope of this phenomenon and discusses it with respect to a theory of conflict of interest. Seemingly, it is more likely to be patent-holders on issues of infrastructures, industry and transport rather than for single technologies as such. According to insights from studies on conflict of interest, there is an increased risk for bias. The article investigates the possible relations between patenting and conflicts of interest according to theoretical and empirical insights from the relation between science and society.

  This paper analyzes a European research project called ‘Deepening Ethical Engagement and Participation in Emerging Nanotechnologies’ with the abbreviation DEEPEN. The DEEPEN’s findings and conclusions on the narratives, public understandings and the lay ethics of nanotechnologies are examined in a critical manner. Through a criticism of the theoretical framings of what constitutes a narrative and the application of a different theoretical framing of narratives, the paper argues that the findings and conclusion of the DEEPEN should be approached with caution as there are several unjustified claims concerning the contextualization of the findings.   This paper presents comparative work from the EST-Frame project on technology appraisal. It focuses on studies of ‘advisory domains’ (more or less distinct traditions for assessment of technologies, such as risk analysis, foresight and ethical assessments). The purpose of the study was to increase the understanding of current assessments in order to identify whether more integrated approaches were needed. We present an analytic approach for studying assessments across advisory domains and present findings from our analytic studies, showing differences in methodological characteristics across the domains. We discuss how the domains partially overlap and identify gaps. We show how most of the selected assessments address technology trajectories and science, technology and innovation policies, and few address specific applications. Finally, we argue that quality control is important for the legitimacy of advice on emerging science and technologies and that the domains are important in this respect.

  In this paper I try to approach contemporary Hungarian political culture through an analysis of the history of changing monuments at Szabadság Tér in Budapest. The paper has as its point of origin a protest/irredentist monument facing the present Soviet liberation monument. In order to understand this irredentist monument, I look into the meaning of the earlier irredentist monuments under Horthy and try to see what monuments were torn down under Communism and which ones remained. I further argue that changes in the other monuments also affect the meaning of the others. From this background I enter into a brief interpretation of changes in memory culture in relation to changes in political culture. The conclusions point toward the fact that Hungary is actively pursuing a cleansing of its past in public spaces, and that this process is reflected in an increased acceptance of political authoritarianism

  A number of EU institutions and government committees across Europe have expressed interest in developing methods and decision-support tools to facilitate consideration of the ethical dimensions of biotechnology assessment. As part of the work conducted in the EC supported project on ethical tools (Ethical Bio-TA Tools), a number of ethical frameworks with the potential to support the work of public policy decision-makers has been characterized and evaluated. One of these potential tools is the Delphi method. The Delphi method was originally developed to assess variables that are intangible and/or shrouded in uncertainty by drawing on the knowledge and abilities of a diverse group of experts through a form of anonymous and iterative consultation. The method has hitherto been used by a diversity of practitioners to explore issues such as technology assessment, environmental planning, and public health measures. From the original (classical) Delphi, a family of Delphi-related processes has emerged. As a result of the evaluation of the various Delphi processes, it is proposed that the classical method can be further developed and applied as a form of ethical framework to assist policy-makers. Through a series of exercises and trials, an Ethical Delphi has been developed as a potential approach for characterizing ethical issues raised by the use of novel biotechnologies. Advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed. Further work is needed to develop the procedural aspects of the Ethical Delphi method and to test its use in different cultural contexts. However, utilizing an ethical framework of this type combines the advantages of a methodical approach to capture ethical aspects with the democratic virtues of transparency and openness to criticism. Ethical frameworks such as the Ethical Delphi should contribute to better understanding of and decision-making on issues that involve decisive ethical dimensions.

  The Ethical Matrix was developed to help decision-makers explore the ethical issues raised by agri-food biotechnologies. Over the decade since its inception the Ethical Matrix has been used by a number of organizations and the philosophical basis of the framework has been discussed and analyzed extensively. The role of tools such as the Ethical Matrix in public policy decision-making has received increasing attention. In order to further develop the methodological aspects of the Ethical Matrix method, work was carried out to study the potential role of the Ethical Matrix as a decision support framework. When considering which frameworks to apply when analyzing the ethical dimensions of the application of agri-food biotechnologies, it is important to clarify the substantive nature of any prospective framework. In order to further investigate this issue, reflections on the neologism “ethical soundness” of an ethical framework are presented here. This concept is introduced in order to provide more structured evaluations of a range of ethical tools, including ethical frameworks such as the Ethical Matrix. As well as examining the philosophical dimensions of the method, theoretical analysis and literature studies were combined with stakeholder engagement exercises and consultations in order to review the Ethical Matrix from a user perspective. This work resulted in the development of an Ethical Matrix Manual, which is intended to act as a guide for potential user groups.

  This book offers the policy-maker or decision-maker key insights and practical information regarding the features of ethics frameworks best suited to the ethical assessment of human cognitive enhancement (HCE) applications, such as pharmaceutical cognitive enhancers and noninvasive brain stimulation techniques. This book takes as its departure point the entrenched philosophical debate between opponents and proponents of HCE and the increased feasibility of some applications of HCE. Recent calls for policy-making in the area of human enhancement reflect the need to find a balance between addressing current ethical issues and issues that are more speculative in nature or are underpinned by abstract philosophical concepts.   This paper performs a close reading to interrogate the function of generative AI (gen-AI) in the production of literary texts. By situating the emergence of gen-AI within the theoretical framework of Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author, the analysis investigates whether the algorithm fulfills Barthes’ vision of the "scriptor" or introduces new forms of textual alienation. The inquiry is structured around three Barthesian arguments: the linguistic, the socio-historical, and the literary.Linguistically, gen-AI demonstrates a capacity to occupy the position of the grammatical subject, or the "instance saying I," effectively functioning as a "linguistic scriptor". However, the socio-historical analysis reveals a critical departure from Barthes’ anti-capitalist project. Rather than democratizing textuality, the development of AI represents a transfer of power from the public sphere to large multinationals, effectively accelerating the drivers of individualism and corporate control.Furthermore, the paper argues that gen-AI lacks the fundamental "truthfulness"—defined by the virtues of sincerity and accuracy—that characterizes the willed "weaving" of human literature. Utilizing Harry Frankfurt’s concept of "bullshit," the author contends that AI's indifference to truth distinguishes it from human scriptors like Proust or Mallarmé, whose artistic projects are defined by normative obligations to their craft.Finally, the contribution critiques recent empirical studies that suggest a public preference for AI-generated poetry. Such research is problematized for privileging "superficial readability" over the "interpretive depth" and "poetic complexity" essential to literary reception. The paper concludes that while gen-AI presents a novel form of enunciation, its lack of willed intention and its alignment with hyper-capitalist interests pose significant risks to the aesthetic and democratic integrity of literature.

Korsvoll og Margrethe Løøv – tar over etter veiledning fra Marianne Hafnor Bøe. Den avtroppende redaksjonen takkes for sitt solide arbeid.   The year by year translation into English of now the first four of Karl Ove Knausgaard’s virtuosic six-volume novel, Min Kamp (My Struggle), has become something of a slow-gathering storm. Ambiguously figured as “autobiographical” by some, the volumes present an absorbing, even gripping, first person narrative of the life of a Norwegian writer living in Stockholm today, an Everyman of sorts, one with the same name as the author. In its expansiveness, its textures, even in its anti-romanticism, Knausgaard’s is a world at once fully disillusioned and yet thoroughly enchanted. The yield is a weird sort of hieroglyph. It is not full of meaning per se, but—as confession, meditation, psychological self-portrait, and indeed, as ethnography—Knausgaard’s world is certainly full. It presents an irresistible occasion for reflecting on the secular as religion. This is a closed reading group. Public programming based on its work will follow in the coming year.

  This thesis investigates Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and its possible application for assessing assistive technologies. Such assessments aim to produce ethically acceptable solutions as well as enhanced value for the user groups. RRI connects science, innovation, society and citizens in the creation of social goods or the realisation of social values through research and development processes. Although RRI has been an ideal for the governance of science for almost a decade, it remains little studied, in particular in the field of health and assistive technologies. The notion has received support from several European research funding agencies, but is still only in its infancy when it comes to concrete application with and for citizens and society. The goal of this thesis is to investigate how the governance of assistive technologies can become more responsible through assessments. The research process underlying this investigation was itself inspired by RRI. Through extensive literature searches and several engagement activities with potential users, important stakeholders and their representatives, this thesis investigates the performance of socio-ethical assessments of assistive technologies in light of RRI. It draws on earlier research on Technology Assessment (TA) and applied ethics – and the interconnections between these two traditions – to investigate how these traditions might deliver assessment frameworks in line with the normative demands of RRI; and how to relate these traditions to Health Technology Assessments (HTA), the main approach to making policy decisions on new health interventions. By using of a combination of two such frameworks, the Ethical Matrix and the Socratic approach, this thesis suggests that an exploratory approach to RRI can inform assessment strategies and has the potential to enhance responsibility through both process and product selection. In particular, the thesis illustrates that there are lacunas in the municipal innovation process, where value decisions are made, and that structured assessment methodologies could improve the quality of such decisions. The thesis contributes to an understanding of what RRI could entail in practical research through using its methodological and normative positions as points of departure for investigations into the values in assistive technologies. It also introduces a new approach to innovation chains for assistive technologies in municipalities and it explores how to enhance methods in applied ethics through a combination of the Ethical Matrix and the Socratic approach.

  AFI har, i samarbeid med Storbyprogrammet (HiOA) og arkitektfirmaet Snøhetta, gjennomført en bred sosiokulturell stedsanalyse av Tøyen på oppdrag for Oslo kommune ved Bydel Gamle Oslo. Oppdraget var å kartlegge og analysere demografiske, sosiokulturelle og fysiske aspekter ved Tøyen der disse dimensjonene sees i sammenheng. Stedsanalysen skal gi svar på tre problemstillinger: Hvordan er befolkningen på Tøyen sammensatt, og hvordan endres den? Hvilke sosiale og fysiske nærmiljøkvaliteter brukes og verdsettes? Hva sav-ner befolkningen av tilbud og tjenester, og hva er de største utfordringene ved området? Stedsana-lysen er basert på to overordnede metodiske grep: Vi har undersøkt demografien og levekårene i området ved hjelp av kvantitative analyser og vi har gjort et omfattende feltarbeid med dybdein-tervjuer, workshoper og observasjoner i dagliglivet. Befolkningen på Tøyen er mangfoldig langs mange dimensjoner. Området har stor utskifting av beboere, og bærer preg av å være et transittområde for mange. Én av tre er på flyttefot hvert år, og det er særlig majoritetsnorske barn i skolealder og deres foreldre i 30-40-årene som flytter ut, mens unge voksne i 20-årene flytter inn. Befolkningen er polarisert når det gjelder levekår og so-sioøkonomiske forhold, og forskjellene mellom gruppene øker. For å styrke nærmiljøet foreslår vi tiltak som bidrar til å utvikle møteplasser og uterom, bekjempe fattigdom og kriminalitet, bedre boforhold og bomiljø, samt styrke engasjement, aktivisme og frivil-lighet.
