Paper on Workplace Violence at the ICERI 2025

Trude Tonholm presented the paper Preparing Social Work Students for Workplace Violence: Insights from a Norwegian Study at ICERI 2025. Social workers often face challenging and sometimes dangerous situations in their professional lives. A recent study at Østfold University College explores how future social workers perceive the risk of violence and how education can better prepare them for these realities.

The study investigates Norwegian social work students’ awareness and attitudes toward workplace violence and personal risk. Findings reveal that while most students are aware of the issue through media, few considered it when choosing their education. Nearly all respondents (97%) expressed a desire for training and discussion on risk management. The research highlights the importance of balancing preparation with sensitivity to students’ emotional well-being. A new module combining theory, seminars, and optional practical training aims to equip students with knowledge, communication techniques, and coping strategies. This initiative underscores the need for educational institutions to address latent and manifest threats proactively, bridging the gap between academic preparation and real-world challenges.
