Dr. Frode Ramstad Johansen is an associate professor in innovation processes at the Engineering Department of Østfold University of Applied Sciences, doing research together with industry and public sector the last 20 years.

Lectures and supervise at bachelor and masters level primarily in innovation, digitalization and project leadership, with a passion for team oriented project based teaching and learning. Organize and support student led projects with organisations in public, private and voluntary sector.

Examines at bachelor's and master's level both internally and externally. Develops interdisciplinary collaboration through student activities such as Innocamp with nursing and innovation students for new health solutions, innovation for bioengineering students to rethink practices, and interdisciplinary project on social innovation with innovation students and labor and welfare students.

His supervision emphasizes action and process perspectives, it's intensive and helping students navigate their project through the flow of new knowledge, connections and tasks.

Recently, he researches in the EU project FREIIA and the EEA project FETREC on how collective organisation of sustainable innovation processes can strengthen development. Island communities acts as pilots in both projects, with a focus on circular solutions and young entrepreneurship. The framework for the projects is the green shift and the dilemma with the digital society that should benefit island communities, while island communities are experiencing depopulation, particularly of young people. The project is part of the research group Innovation.

With a background in studying uncertain and emerging innovation processes, he focuses on the actors' capacity for action within these contexts. Specifically, he explores the interactions between actors and artifacts, including the impact of digital transformation and the green shift, that lead to an action net. His research aims to understand the connections that enable collaboration, facilitating the development of improved work processes that strengthen both work life and sustainability.

In recent years, his work has contributed to better collective work processes, aiding organisations and local communities in creating improved and more sustainable solutions.  Dr. Johansen's approach emphasizes action and process perspectives, offering insights into emerging processes and helping actors navigate through them effectively.

He holds a PhD in innovation processes from Aalborg University's Department of planning at the Faculty of IT and design. This is supported by a MSc in Information Technology from the University of Stavanger and a BSc in Industrial IT/automation from Østfold University of Applied Sciences.

Dr. Johansen is lead of the Trustworthy AI-lab at Østfold University of Applied Sciences, intending to encourage debate and reflection on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence. The lab is acting as a meeting place for the international community, such as the Z-Inspection® assessment method for Trustworthy AI and its affiliated labs globally. Trustworthy AI Lab at the university, Dr. Johansen is engaged locally and internationally in assessments of the reliability of AI solutions and the ethical considerations surrounding their implementation by organisations.

Further, he is international coordinator at the Department of Engineering, promoting and assisting with the inbound and outbound exchange of students and staff at the department. Cooperates with the International Team at the faculty level to promote activities for internationalization and establish arenas for international collaboration.
