Digital transformation in healthcare is the leveraging of advanced technologies to improving the delivery of care to patients and to coping with new requirements of such delivery, most notably the shift from hospital care to home care. While centering on patient needs, it also necessarily requires changes and improvements of healthcare-related processes. Whereas various benefits of this transformation are broadly acknowledged, the increased connectivity; the huge volume of sensitive health information; and the lack of sufficient cybersecurity awareness and culture among both healthcare professionals and patients result in increased cybersecurity risk and make digital healthcare attractive to cyber criminals and prone to cybersecurity attacks such as phishing, ransomware, distributed denial-of-service attacks, and malware. The increasing connection of medical devices to the Internet, hospital networks and other medical devices expands the attack surface making the patient safety risks higher. The recent COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the interdependence and co-evolutionary dynamic of the cybersecurity and privacy risks in healthcare. All these have raised the need to develop new solutions to increase the cybersecurity and resilience of the healthcare sector and its supply chain.

The workshop “Secure and Resilient Digital Transformation of Healthcare” will provide a discussion platform for researchers in the field and an opportunity to share novel research on the topic. The target audience also includes healthcare professionals and managers of healthcare organizations.

Sustainability in higher IT education: Addressing sustainability in bachelor’s and masters’ theses

Room: C1-007 (VIP-rom)

The workshop will be the fifth in a row of similarly themed workshops held in conjunction with NIKT. With these workshops we seek to contribute to engagement and continuity the IT education community related to the integration of sustainability and digitalization in teaching and learning.

The challenge of integrating sustainability in students’ final projects is common to all higher education institutions and study programs in IT education. We would greatly benefit from experience sharing, comparing practices and learning from each other. Our workshop at NIKT 2025 will have active participation from various universities and explore concrete challenges and opportunities linked to the integration of sustainability in bachelor’s and masters’ projects.

After an introduction to the topic and a brief presentation of experiences from NTNU, the workshop will systematically address the various practices in the participants’ institutions. We will do this through structured discussion in groups or in plenary, depending on the number of participants. The discussion will focus on the relevant learning objectives, learning activities, artifacts (including the thesis itself), and the integration of sustainability both on a course and a study program level. Also, participants will discuss how the various practices can be addressed in a joint scientific publication as a continuation of the workshop, possibly with UDIT 2026 as a first step.

The workshop organisers are Birgit R. Krogstie and John Krogstie from NTNU. Download the full workshop description here: workshop-proposal_nikt2025_sustainability-in-it-education.pdf

ICT education in the age of generative AI: competencies for critical thinking and reflective practice

Room: D1-055/56

The rapid adoption of generative AI (GenAI) in industry and higher education presents new challenges and opportunities for ICT education. Students now enter university already accustomed to using GenAI tools, often without any training or guidance, while ICT graduates face workplaces where these tools are becoming integral to daily practice. This underscores a need for research-informed approaches to integrate GenAI tools into teaching and learning responsibly.

This workshop will explore the implications of the GenAI shift for ICT education and how it can adapt its learning outcomes, content, and teaching methods in response to the rapid evolution of these tools. Specifically, we focus on critical thinking and reflective practice as a foundation for responsible engagement with GenAI tools. We aim to build a shared understanding of key competencies for ICT students and to collaboratively develop ideas for helping them build these competencies. Furthermore, our workshop seeks to strengthen collaborative networks among ICT educators to support ongoing dialogue and joint initiatives in this emerging field.

The first part of the workshop establishes the foundation through a series of brief presentations and discussions. In the second part, participants work in facilitated groups using interactive tools such as Miro and Mentimeter to identify relevant roles and competencies, analyze opportunities and challenges, and develop actionable pedagogical strategies. The workshop concludes with a plenary synthesis, network-building activity, and a brief wrap-up outlining next steps.

The workshop is co-organized by the Department of Computer Science and Communication at Østfold University College and the Department of Computer Science at NTNU.
