CSET is a global initiative where local groups from around the world gather and discuss the common theme: ‘Problematising education and digital technology’ adressing the same questions. All these events will take place during the same week (between February 17th and 21st, week 8 of 2025 - due to week 8 being a traditional holiday week, we chose Friday 14th, in week 7). The goal is to foster meaningful networking while minimizing the need for extensive travel. Insights and outcomes from these local discussions will be compiled into a publicly accessible report. For more information, please see the invitation to connect on Prof. Neil Selwyn's blog.

The Oslo CSET 2025 meeting is open to all scholars (in HE, schools or public organisations) with an interest in critically discussing issues related to education and digital technology in a face-to-face setting.

The meeting is organised jointly by the research groups RIDE at Østfold University College and TEPEC at the University of Oslo. The main language of the meeting will be Norwegian, but if a group prefers to speak English, that is perfectly fine!

Program

The Oslo meeting is organized into roundtable discussions on four key questions that are common for all CSET 2025 local meetings across the globe. We kindly ask that you take a look at the questions in advance and consider your stance or prepare some viewpoints.

[9:30 - 10:00 Coffee/tea]

10:00-10:15 Welcome and introduction round

10:15-11:00 Roundtable 1

What are the pressing issues, concerns, tensions and problems that surround EdTech in our locality? What questions do we need to ask, and what approaches will help us research these questions?

11:15-12:00  Roundtable 2

What social harms are we seeing associated with digital technology and education in our locality?

12:00-13:00 Lunch

We invite you to eat lunch with us at the Domus Juridica canteen (we cover the cost).

13:00-13:45 Roundtable 3

What does the political economy of EdTech look like in our region? What do local EdTech markets look like? How are global Big Tech corporations manifest in local education systems? What does EdTech policy look like, and which actors are driving policymaking? What do we find if we "follow" the money?

14:00-14:45 Roundtable 4

What grounds for hope are there? Can we point to local instances of digital technology leading to genuine social benefits and empowerment? What local push-back and resistance against egregious forms of EdTech is evident? What alternate imaginaries are being circulated about education and digital futures?

14:45-15:00 Discussion of key takeaways / wrapping up
