Focus areas
The overlapping areas described below give an overview of topics RIDE is interested in. We employ various traditional and more creative methods to explore the following:
Teaching and learning with, about, through and despite digital technology
This is our main area of research and includes topics such as chatbots and writing processes, digitalisation and language teaching, collaborative writing with digital tools, online teaching (MOOCs), classroom leadership in technology-rich environments, AI and Bildung, and critical perspectives on educational technology.
Teachers’ and teacher educators’ professional digital competence and competence development
This area focuses on the teaching profession in the digital context, including professional practice and policy. We explore how simulation may contribute to professional development and knowledge integration.
School leadership and digital transformation
This area explores digital leadership in schools as for example theoretical conceptualisations, leadership styles, new challenges for school leaders, facilitation of technology integration and teacher professional development, digital leadership for online schools and future scenarios.
Children’s and youth’s digital lives, inclusion and well being
This area focuses on topics that are not explicitly related to teaching but relevant for teachers since they influence how children feel and consequently effects their behaviour and performance in school, examples are digital exclusion, children and youth’s exposure to digital pornography, digitalisation and mental health issues.
Research activities
RIDE is more than just a research group — it is a home for researchers at all stages of their academic journey. We want to foster a supportive, inclusive, and inspiring environment where members help each other grow and develop as researchers.
Our group offers a wide range of activities to support research ideas, plans, projects, and publications. We place particular emphasis on mentoring and supporting PhD students, recognizing the importance of guidance in the early stages of an academic career.
Driven by the interests and initiatives of its members, RIDE encourages the open sharing of research at all stages — from early ideas and drafts to data analysis and full papers, conference presentations, and trial lectures. Constructive feedback and collaborative learning are at the heart of our practice. We read and discuss core texts, explore relevant theoretical and methodological concepts, and invite guest lecturers and visiting scholars. We also organize seminars, often in collaboration with other research groups at HiØ and regularly with TEPEC (University of Oslo). In addition, we actively support each other in applying for external funding and other projects, recognizing that research is both an individual and collective endeavour.
