Investigating VRI: Applications and Implications for Interpreter Trainers, Students, and Practitioners.

By approaching interpreting as interaction, Wadensjö (1998) found that interpreting consists of both translation and coordination. While the translation side of the process is tightly connected to how the interpreter renders utterances in another language, the coordination aspect relates to how utterances are managed in the interaction. In interaction, we use a range of communicative resources, e.g., gaze, bodily position, gesture and more, to create meaning and to organize the interaction. However, when one or more participants are not physically present, as is the case in video-mediated environments, this affects the ways in which these various communicative resources can be used. In video-remote interpreting (VRI) in particular, the interpreter (in the remote position) does not have the same access to the other participants’ resources in interaction, due to the technological conditions, such as delay in transfer of sound and image and limited camera scope and cannot use multimodal resources as efficiently as in face-to-face interpreting. This may challenge both the coordination and the translation side of the interpreter’s interactional work. Based on our empirical research on VRI, we describe some of the characteristics of VRI, some challenges that might occur in interaction and what interpreter trainers need to know in order to prepare interpreting students for VRI in professional practice.

Co-creating an interactional space in video-interpreted interaction.

Video-technology is generally considered to be an efficient way to provide interpreting services, as it allows participants to cut travel time and costs while at the same time providing an interactional space promising the participants visual access to each-other. Based on conversation analysis, this paper explores how the participants in video-interpreted hospital settings organize their interactional space, and through these actions display an orientation to the interpreters’ rights and obligations in the interaction. Although visual access is thought to benefit interpreting, this analysis shows how the participants do not necessarily create a shared interactional space displaying all the participants. In this paper, I explore how the professionals on each side of the technology (the interpreter and the medical professional) orient to the visual configuration of the setting, and how this reflects back on professional practices and mutual expectations. The participants’ visual access to each-other might be (but is not always) brought up during the opening of the video-interpreted meeting. Although participants’ lack of visual access to each-other may cause problems in the interaction (e.g. misunderstandings regarding who is referred to by the second person pronoun), questions of how to sit or visual access are not necessarily treated by the interpreter as relevant to respond to or engage with. For instance, by interpreting the medical professional’s question about seating arrangements rather than responding, an interpreter contributes to delimiting the question to a matter between the doctor and patient rather than a matter of visual access for the interpreter. While the participants’ actions indicate an orientation to perceived interactional rights and obligations of the interpreter, the visual configuration of the setting has consequences for the interpreter’s access to the interactional space and subsequently for the interpreting.

Frp foreslår at vi bør kutte retten til gratis tolk til innvandrere etter fem års botid i landet. Dette er en dårlig idé. Som minoritetsspråklig i Norge får man ikke tolk til hva som helst. Når det bestilles tolk i dag, står det ofte noe på spill (for eksempel rettssikkerhet eller tilgang til faglig forsvarlige tjenester), i tillegg til at de som skal snakke sammen ikke har et felles språk. Altså vil tolkingen være nødvendig for å få gjennomført viktige samtaler.

Vårt Oslo skriver 27.7 at bekymret helsepersonell har slitt med å kommunisere med pasienter ved bruk av skjermtolking. Dette har i tur ført til at enkelte pasienter ikke har fått behandling over lang tid. Mens myndighetene oppfordrer til økt bruk av skjermtolking, vet vi enda lite om hvordan å få til slike samtaler på en god måte.
