How can supervisors’ use of career guidance perspectives be a strength for newly qualified teachers in the transition between education and profession? Through three narratives, it is highlighted that an expansion of the guidance room, where career guidance perspectives are included, can help newly qualified newly appointed teachers to handle the complexity of their new professional roles and increase their self-efficacy. The article uses dialogical autoethnographic methods to illustrate how career guidance can provide insight and support in this transition phase, and highlights career theoretical perspectives in light of Krumboltz, Bandura, Super and Savickas. Our experience is that career guidance can help to highlight the individual’s life situation, wishes and opportunities beyond what belongs to the professional profession. This involves looking at the interplay between work, leisure, family, and other areas of life, an approach that Super’s career rainbow illustrates. Professional guidance aims to help new teachers enter and develop existing professional communities and established cultures. For new teachers who are in a demanding transition phase, a holistic approach, as this article highlights, can be crucial to strengthening self-efficacy, motivation, and well-being.
