Academic integrity
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) may be used as support in the learning process, but must not replace your own understanding, competence, or skills. Everything you submit must reflect your own knowledge.
Submitting work that you have not completed yourself, in whole or in part, as if it were your own, is considered cheating.
Transparency
All use of services that generate text, code, images, or other content must be secure, lawful, and ethically sound.
If GenAI is permitted in an assignment, coursework, or examination, you must:
- ensure that the final product is your independent work
- be transparent about how you have used GenAI
Right to information
The course coordinator determines the extent to which GenAI may be used:
- in teaching
- in practice placements
- in coursework and examinations
Permitted aids, including the degree of allowed GenAI use, must always be clearly specified in the assignment instructions. You are required to follow these instructions.
Levels of GenAI use at Østfold University College
Note: If the course coordinator specifies their own rules or clarifications, these take precedence over the descriptions below. The course coordinator may also adapt or adjust the different levels if necessary.
1. No GenAI Use
You must not use GenAI in your work. Your submission must demonstrate your own fundamental skills and knowledge, and you must confirm that GenAI tools or services have not been used.
2. GenAI for Planning
You may use GenAI to:
- plan your work
- develop ideas for content and research questions
- explore topics and approaches
The actual submission must be produced as independent work.
You must explain how GenAI has been used.
3. GenAI During the Process
You may use GenAI as support during parts of the work process, for example for:
- feedback on drafts
- improving language, structure, or content
You must critically evaluate the suggestions and be able to explain the choices you have made.
You must explain how GenAI has been used.
4. Full Use of GenAI
You may use GenAI as much as you wish, or as permitted by the assignment instructions.
You must:
- use GenAI appropriately
- demonstrate the ability to make critical and independent academic choices
Content produced by GenAI must be clearly identified, for example:
- as a footnote
- in parentheses after GenAI-generated sections
- through proper citation in accordance with Kildekompasset
You must explain how GenAI has been used.
5. Exploratory Use of GenAI
You are expected to use GenAI in creative and exploratory ways to:
- solve academic tasks
- explore new possibilities within the subject
This may be done in collaboration with the instructor.
You must explain how GenAI has been used.
Template for Describing GenAI Use in Your Submission
In your submission, you must:
- state the permitted level of GenAI use (as specified in the assignment instructions)
- briefly explain how you have used GenAI
Students may adapt the text. A maximum of 150 words is recommended.
Level 1
I confirm that I have not used GenAI in this work.
Level 2
I have used GenAI for planning. I have explained how the tools were used, how the suggestions were evaluated, and how the final result reflects the requirement for independent work.
Level 3
I have used GenAI to improve language, structure, and content. I have explained how the tools were used, what improvements were made, and how the final result reflects independent work.
Level 4
I have used GenAI for analysis, discussion, drafting, and exploratory work. I have explained how the tools were used, what choices I made, and how the final result reflects independent work.
