Spring 2026: PhD course and conference

The international research network Navigating Knowledge Landscapes (NKL) – where many of our researchers are active – is launching its first PhD course (5 ECTS) in collaboration with our PhD programme Digitalisation and Society.

Bildet viser de to fagansatte fra HiØ som er sentrale i planleggingen av kurset.

Both Fredrik Andersen and  Anna Lydia Svalastog are local organizers and contribute academically to the PhD course and the conference.

The course also includes access to the 10th annual NKL conference: “Centre–Periphery in the AI‑Informed Digital Society”.

“Transdisciplinary Research, Life Course and Cross-Cultural Perspectives in the Era of AI”. Developed jointly with our long-standing partner University West.

The course combines:

  • three digital half-day seminars, starting April 13.
  • an in-person gathering at our campus in Fredrikstad
  • participation in the NKL conference together with researchers from across the world

Want to join?

Participants must submit a 250‑word abstract by 22 February.

Why this matters

- Bringing together a large, international network of researchers and building a PhD course around it is quite unique. For PhD candidates it can be difficult to gain access to interdisciplinary conferences of this kind, whereas here they get access to researchers across many fields in one place, says associate professor Fredrik Andersen at the Department og Welfare, Management and Organisation.

-The importance of meeting and building relationships across national borders in the turbulent times we live in is also significant, says professor Anna Lydia Svalastog.

For PhD candidates – internal & external

- We’re very pleased that different academic environments at HiØ offer courses that can be included as elective parts of the PhD training. This course is a great example—highly relevant to understanding trans‑ and interdisciplinarity in today’s digital society,” says Special Adviser Geir Afdal.
