Academic interests

I am interested in Romance Philology and the transition from Latin to the Romance languages, especially as concerns the written culture and its connection to the spoken languages during the Roman Empire and after. I am also interested in the syntax of the Old Romance languages, and the relationship between syntax and pragmatics. I am especially interested in embedded clauses, both those embedded under so-called bridge verbs and the canonical embedded clauses. My preferred Romance language for research is Spanish, but I am also very fond of Italian.

Background

I have been at Østfold University College since January 2016, teaching Spanish grammar at lower levels, and language typology for master students in teacher education. In 2021 I will tecah the MFRISK Master course in Interlanguage analysis.

Befor 2016 I had a Postdoc-project at the University of Oslo on the information structure of Old Spanish. Also at the University of Oslo, I have taught Modern Spanish grammar and History of the Spanish language. My PhD-thesis was on the Glosas Emilianenses, some of the first written words and sentences in Spanish (i.e. clearly not in Latin).

I debatten om hvilken plass grammatikken skal ha i skolen, kan det i dag sies å være to hovedkategorier av legitimeringsargumenter – én som vektlegger grammatikkundervisning for grammatikkens egen skyld, og én som regner grammatikken primært eller bare som verktøy i skriveundervisninga. I denne artikkelen analyserer vi grunnleggende begrepsbruk i introduksjonskapittelet til seks grunnbøker i grammatikk i lys av disse legitimeringskategoriene og det paradigmeskiftet innen språklæring som omtales som den kommunikative vendinga. Analysen omfatter både begrepet grammatikk i seg sjøl og andre sentrale termer i debatten, og vi ser bruken i introduksjonskapitla opp mot annen relevant didaktisk litteratur. Vi går inn på dikotomien språket som system og språket i bruk og problematiserer den sentrale plassen dette historisk viktige, men kanskje ikke lenger så aktuelle, skillet har i dagens læreplanverk og dermed i bøker retta mot skolen. Videre drøfter vi termene tradisjonell, formell, funksjonell og kontekstuell, og viser at de er så mangetydige at det blir vanskelig å anvende dem i grammatikkdidaktiske diskurser. Vi går også kort inn på bruken av termen metaspråk. Samla sett viser analysen noen uklarheter med tanke på definisjoner og termbruk, og dessuten at enkelte aktører vier plass til å snakke ned grammatikk som fagfelt. Diskusjonen har relevans både for norskfaget og de andre språkfaga i skolen.

Setter vi noe av det mest verdifulle menneskeheta har på spill når vi blir oppfordra til å hoppe på et KI-tog i full marsjtakt? Eller er generativ kunstig intelligens et nyttig verktøy for å løse språkrelaterte oppgaver på en mer effektiv måte? Arrangementet Hva med språket? handler om språk, både de norske språkene og tekstpraksiser som lesing og skriving, i møte med en forventning om radikal omveltning og økt effektivisering ved innføringa av nye teknologier. Samtaleroboter som bygger på store språkmodeller, genererer språklige uttrykk som kan inneholde underlige, innholdstomme og unorske språklige konstruksjoner. Likevel blir slike løsninger anbefalt og tatt i bruk som skriveverktøy og foreslått som språklige assistenter og verktøy til en rekke oppgaver knyttet til språklæring, skriving og tekstproduksjon. Teknologier som ikke er bygget for norsk språk tas i bruk i skole og arbeidsliv som skrivestøtte og verktøy uten at kvaliteten på den språklige utputten er tilstrekkelig kvalitetssikret. Offentlige tjenester utvikler digitale tjenesteplattformer i form av samtaleroboter med automatisk oversettelse til flere språk – uten at utputten kvalitetssikres. Hvilke konsekvenser har dette for individet? Hvilke konsekvenser har det for samfunnet? I møte med økt bruk av maskingenerert tekst er det viktigere enn noensinne at vi har et bevisst forhold til hva menneskespråk er, hva maskingenerert språk egentlig er og hva som er forskjellen på disse. I det norske språklandskapet, med flere språk med offisiell juridisk status og flere skriftspråk med variasjon i faktisk status og bruksfrekvens, er det dessuten viktig å være bevisst forholdet mellom språkene i samfunnet. Menneskets språklige uttrykksformer er dessuten tett knytta til sosiale forhold som identitet og makt. I dette arrangementet gir språkvitere fra Høgskolen i Østfold innblikk i menneskespråk og hvordan språklige praksiser berøres av økt bruk av maskiners språkproduksjon. Vi ser på hvordan maskingenerert tekst kan forsterke maktasymmetrier og skjevheter i samfunnet og snakker om hvordan vi kan møte disse utfordringene. Recomplementation (that is, the repeated appearance of a complementizer-like word in a subordinate clause that follows a verb of speech, thought, or perception) is one of the most intriguing linguistic features of Old Spanish. Previous studies have largely approached this structural type as a syntactic phenomenon (Fontana 1993; Uriagereka 1995), and only recently it has been considered for its discursive properties (Hagemann 2020; Echeverría 2022; Enrique-Arias and Hagemann 2024). In this talk, we will present new data on medieval Spanish recomplementation and show that the linguistic trait is still productive in the 15th century (Fontana, 1993; Hagemann, 2020; and Echeverría, 2022 all studied the phenomenon up until the 14th century). Our data comes from Arragel’s Bible commentary, an extensive text preserved in its original manuscript copied in Toledo between 1422 and 1430. We have read the sections corresponding to the books of Genesis and Exodus and extracted all the occurrences of recomplementation resulting in a total of slightly more than a hundred cases. An example of recomplementation from our data is given bellow, taken from the commentary to Genesis 1:6: Tienen algunos que los estremos e fines del firmamento, have some that the fringes and ends of=the sky, que pegan con los fines del ociano mar. that border with the ends of=the ocean sea ‘Some people hold that the fringes and ends of the sky border with the ocean’ In our analysis, the second instance of que in the above example is an evidential marker, conveying the writer’s commitment to the proposition in the completive clause (see e.g. Ifantidou, 1994). We attempt to tease apart the informative and the communicative intention (Sperber et al., 2010; Sperber & Wilson, 1995[1986]) of these structures in Arragel’s commentary. The data lend themselves readily to such a theoretic endeavor, because of the complex epistemic content which naturally takes place in exegeses. In the example above, for instance, we claim that Arragel is both informing the receiver of the content in the complement clause, i.e. that the fringes and ends of the sky borders with the ocean, while at the same time communicating his own epistemic stance towards that same information, by way of the evidential particle que, which signals weakened commitment to the proposition. Finally, we present a typology of the uses of que in our data, and compare our findings to the existing data from earlier centuries.

Recomplementation, i.e. the occurrence of a second que in Old Spanish complement clauses, was highly productive in the texts of the 13th and 14th centuries (Fontana, 1993), and Enrique-Arias and Hagemann (2024) have shown that the phenomenon was more productive than previously thought in the early 15th century. Over the last decade, studies have suggested that second que is a pragmatic particle marking evidentiality (i.e. Hagemann, 2020; Enrique-Arias and Hagemann, 2024; for a recent syntactic account see Echeverría (2022)). In Modern Spanish, the doubling occurs only in the domain of verbs of saying and is connected to reported speech (González i Planas, 2014; for a recent syntactic account see Villa-García & Ott, 2022). A relevant Old Spanish example is the following taken from Estoria de Espanna (Alfonso X): 1. mas dixo que pues que ell era emperador. que tomaua but he.said that then that he was emperor PP he-took otros .v. annos pora acabar aquello que començara. other 5 years to finish that which he.had.started “But he answered that given that he was the emperor PP he would take another five years to finish what he had started”. (From chapter 6: De cuemo Julio Cesar poblo Seuilla por las cosas que y fallo que fiziera Hercules) The que glossed PP (“pragmatic particle”) in the first line is the issue at hand. In my talk, I will compare such structures in texts from three subsequent centuries, i.e. the 13th, 14th and 15th, collecting data partly from the ISWOC part of the PROIEL corpus (Jøhndal et al., 2007-2016) and partly from Arragel’s Bible commentary, copied in Toledo between 1422 and 1430. The comparison covers matrix verbs, type of material that occurs between the two ques, and pragmatic interpretation. In the pragmatic analysis, I use relevance theory (Sperber & Wilson, 1995/1986) to create a finetuned typology of the different kinds of uses of que, where propositional attitude, speaker commitment and epistemic stance are central concepts (Ifantidou, 1994). In the example above, the matrix verb is dezir and the material between the two ques is a causal clause. The pragmatic context is that Caesar, the referent of ell ‘he’, was given five years to conquer Spain, and if he did not attain the goal, he would lose his status as emperor. He comes no longer than Catalonia in five years and is asked to return by the Romans. The PP could be interpreted as signaling that the decision of staying taken by Caesar is reported speech. Yet on closer scrutiny, there is another, perhaps more primary, analysis, namely that the PP communicates surprise regarding this decision, in light of the previously established relation between the following premises: 1. Caesar has five years to conquer Spain, or else he will have to return in dishonor. 2. He does not accomplish the goal. So, the decision of staying conflicts with the previously established context, where the expected outcome would be returning in dishonor, and this conflict explains the presence of the PP, in this case a marker of surprise or contrast. I show based on the data presented, that the development of second que from its status as an evidential marker with several pragmatic uses in Old Spanish to its simplified version as a marker of reported speech in the modern language already is observable during these centuries.

The thesis provides a methodical analysis of the glosses (11th century) in the Real Academia de la Historia’s Códice Emilianense 60 (10th century), a collection of religious texts from Medieval Christian Spain. The main hypothesis is that the glosses are emendation marks in the manuscript, added to change the language of the base text. The changes are of two kinds that sometimes overlap: Some glosses modify the style of the text, and it is argued that these modifications are intended to improve the oral qualities of the sermons. Such modifications include for instance reiterations and superfluous additions of verbal arguments. Other glosses change the syntax of the text, and it is argued that these changes partly reflect diachronic developments in the language, and partly are connected to stylistic concerns. Examples of the first are phrase-internal changes such as having determinatives precede their noun. An example of the second is the alteration of syntactic functions to simplify complex sentences. The system of glosses is complex and requires knowledge of the language and the grammar by the one who uses them, or they would simply be confusing. The glosses belong to the communication between glossator and the scribe. The changes in themselves, however, are sometimes so self-evident it is difficult to imagine that a literate person would need them. Occasionally, they provide incorrect grammatical information. These changes belong to the communication between preacher and audience/congregation; they are meant to make the texts more accessible. The analysis of the glosses’ impact on the base text therefore sheds light on the oral delivery of written texts in Medieval Spain, and on certain linguistic and stylistic features of the language in that era.
