Overview of the academic field

DigiEd consists of mainly researchers from the Faculty of Teacher Education and Languages which is located at the Halden campus. The faculty is led by Dean Irina Engeness, a faculty that has 175 employees and approximately 2700 students divided among three different institutes and one center.

The thematic subject area, DigiEd, generates new knowledge on how digitalization of society affects teaching and learning and how digital tools and solutions are utilized for promoting learning in different educational contexts.

DigiEd-projects explore micro processes such as the use of digital technologies in educational institutions at various levels, to macro processes such as policy development in the field of education. In addition, digitalization of education is evaluated from different political, economic, cultural, legal and ethical perspectives.  With this, DigiEd wants to highlight educational theoretical understandings that can contribute to increased insight on how digitalization changes learning processs and knowledge, and how the digitalization processes affect education and such.

Increased knowledge about the interplay between digital technologies, practices and activities in which these are utilized, and social and cultural contexts in which they are implemented is explored in the following contexts:

  • Formal educational situations  – processes related to implementation and use of digital technologies are explored, as well as their impact on the actors and institutions in the educational landscape.  In addition, macro processes are explored in the design of education policy/guidelines in a digital world.
  • The working life – how digitalization in working life changes teaching, learning processes and knowledge production is explored.
  • Social arenas – social media, leisure activities and organizational work in an increasingly digital world.

DigiEd explores digitalization processes in these contexts with a background in three different theoretical fields of interest:

  • Within knowledge and knowledge processes we examine the development of the epidemiological and ontological foundations for digital technologies in education using perspectives on socio-material aspects and on distributed, situated and integrated learning processes.
  • Within teaching and learning, we draw on and start with pedagogical, psychological and sociological theories that address how technologies can be designed and used as a template to support, promote and enhance teaching. The implications of these approaches to knowlegde production, digital competence, agency and identity in the 20th century are explored. Aspects of social learning networks, communication and collaboration in digital learning environments and changes in values in education are addressed.
  • Within language and communication we investigate interactions between digital technologies, literacy and writing skills. Language and communication will be included discussions about how technology shapes and sustains values, and ways for communicating and for understanding learning.

Research Groups

Currently there are three research groups that are central to DigiEd's work, but these collaborate with individual researchers and research groups elsewhere in the organization and with external collaboration partners.

Here you can read more about the DigiEd research groups, their researchers, research fellows and research projects.
