SIMTEK – Simulation-based and technology-driven learning methods in profession education and practice (formerly UMSAL)

SIMTEK is an interprofessional research group from the health and welfare education programs at HiØ. Our main goal is to explore the design, quality assurance, and implementation of methods that foster knowledge and competence development. Through research on the use of simulation and technology, we prepare students and professionals to meet the needs of the future.

Research fields

In our research, engagement in the learning process is central. We explore simulation-based learning to develop teaching methods that help students and professionals integrate theoretical knowledge into practical and realistic situations close to professional practice. Our goal is to further develop simulation as a teaching method that prepares students for the challenges they will face in their careers. Through simulation-based learning methods, we aim to promote a sense of mastery, professional reflection, and critical thinking among participants—elements that are essential for quality in professional practice.

An important research area for us is exploring how technology can enhance engagement in learning situations. We investigate the design and implementation of various technology-based learning methods, including the use of media, digital response tools, blended learning, e-learning programs, and virtual learning environments. At the same time, we examine how technology impacts the everyday work of professionals, particularly in relation to competence in digital health services and welfare technology.

Relevance for Digi Group(s):

We operate at the intersections of the Digi groups within HiØ’s strategic area Digitalisation and Society, as we study students’ learning (DigiEd) related to clinical subjects (DigiHealth) and work related subjects (DigiWork).

About the group

The SIMTEK research group brings together researchers from a range of study programs within health and welfare education at Østfold University College, including social education, biomedical laboratory science, nursing, work and welfare studies, social work, and child welfare. We share a common interest in strengthening the quality of education. The group consists of researchers at all career stages, with diverse academic backgrounds and research traditions. Our strength lies in the varied research experience and expertise we bring to the table, enabling us to discuss research design across traditions and challenge each other in the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. This approach makes us a robust and dynamic research group.

SimFredrikstad is an important research arena for SIMTEK, with facilities designed for teaching, interdisciplinary collaboration, skills training, simulation, and self-directed practice. The center is equipped with various training manikins, simulators, technical and welfare technology aids, medical technology equipment, and tools for communication and guidance. Our new high technology space, which we call the immersive room, is a physical, interactive VR arena designed to meet educational needs across a wide range of professions.
