About the performance:

A queer young man moves from a small town to the big city. Coming from isolation, secrecy and an inner world waiting to be revealed, he moves into a collective of like-minded people. A story that a few decades back could end with a life in the shadow of shame now ends happily.

Midway through, the performance begins again. The queer young man has been transformed through the collective struggles for visibility, tolerance and self-dignity. Now he reunites with his own family. The ones he left; the working class that represented the stifling culture of masculinity that he defined himself as opposed to.

How do they look at each other now? How can they find each other again?

The script is inspired by the writing of Didier Eribon. Eribon writes from an autobiographical standpoint and therefore discusses identity politics from the perspective of the gay man. From this starting point, we have researched domination mechanisms and created a piece about class, the power of insults, the creation of social identities and the ways in which hierarchies are (re)produced and (re)negotiated in society.

Welcome to a world of protected freedom, a safe space where everything you need to exist is provided, all available options already laid out. As we stumble among the objects that both define us and weigh us down, what do we take with us and what do we leave?
