Ordinary urban sights and unexpected occurrences

UNLOCK THE CITY!, a European network of theatres, academies and universities, did take off this summer. We are presenting our first performances in different cities.

From 22 until 30 September 'Seefhoek Series' by Thomas Verstraeten (Toneelhuis) took place in Antwerp (Belgium). Verstraeten penetrated the soul of the urban district Seefhoek, a vibrant but marginalized Antwerp neighbourhood. Ordinary urban sights and unexpected occurrences inspired and invited Verstraeten to make shows, videos and installations. 'Seefhoek Series' was a seven-part location project. In each episode, Verstraeten examined a different aspect of the Seefhoek, only to lift it out of its context, turn it around, take it apart, enlarge it, isolate it, and then finally reintroduce it into that same urban context. Thomas Verstraeten invited 300 residents of Seefhoek to join him in searching for beauty, resilience and poetry in a reality that can be stubborn at times.
