As our investigation through the EU funded research project "UNLOCKTHECITY!" continues, our first student workshop challenges conventional perceptions of maps through the lens of sensory experience.
Thanks to the collaboration between the students of the Norwegian Theatre Academy at Østfold University College and University and the Politecnico di Milano, the aim was to unravel the intricate fabric of maps as tools for orientation, facilitation, control, and sometimes, oppression.
Throughout the workshop, we delved into exciting topics, enriching our understanding of the landscape and showcasing diverse perspectives in reading, relating to, and processing the distinct neighbourhood of the Corvetto-Porto di Mare area in Milan.
In synergy with the ongoing performing arts project by Marta Cuscunà with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the workshop explored the unique landscape of Porto di Mare park, to understand maps beyond just navigation tools and seeing them as a blend of personal experiences and visual representations.
Students explored the social landscape by mapping sounds in urban areas, understanding how our senses shape our perceptions and delving into auditory and olfactory observations to enrich our understanding of urban and peri-urban surroundings.
Now, as this first workshop ends, we're eager to see how our students will carry this investigation forward.
