Cost of living in Norway

General living costs in Norway are high. However, Fredrikstad and Halden are not as expensive as other larger cities in Norway.

We estimate that you will need around NOK 48,000 – 55,000 each semester to cover accommodation and most of your basic expenses.

  • Housing (per month): NOK 4,430 - 6,400, single room
  • Food and household expenses (per month): NOK 2,000 – 2,500
  • Books and supplies (per semester): NOK 2,500 – 3,500
  • Transport (per month): NOK 350
  • Other expenses (per month): NOK 1,000 – 1,500
  • Total (per month): 9,000 – 11,000

Tuition fees

Østfold University College is a publicly funded institution and we do not charge any tuition fees. However, students must pay a small semester fee of about NOK 800, which is the same amount as Norwegian students pay. Exchange students from partner institutions do not have to pay the semester fee at Østfold University College.

Scholarships

Østfold University College does not provide any scholarships.

Accommodation

The rent at the student residence halls in Halden and Fredrikstad is approximately NOK 4,500 per month. You will also have to pay a deposit of two months’ rent when you sign the tenancy contract.

Transport

The campus in Fredrikstad has a central location and you will have very low transport expenses if you choose to live in our student residence halls. The campus and residence halls in Halden are located outside the city centre and you might want to take the bus to the city centre.

Books and supplies

It can be quite costly to buy all the books you need during the semester. We recommend that you actively use the libraries at our two campuses. The libraries at Østfold University College give students access to large collections of books and a number of international article databases and electronic journals.
