How to get you started when working with newly arrived students with little or no experience of English

Topic: Communication and Decision-making skills
Grade: Vgs (can be adapted to suit other levels)

About the resource

Communication skills are the focus of this resource. By working with their templates, students build up a bank of vocabulary to become active participants in class and in conversations throughout the year. The templates also support in discussing and reflecting on how students can best reach their goals. Students are actively encouraged to use all the languages they know.

The templates in this resource allow students to take ownership of how their language learning which may lead to a higher level of motivation. The templates also help teachers keep track of their students progress and abilities, aiding teachers in assessement.

Teacher tip

Provide each student with a folder to keep their templates in. Students often need help to structure their work. With an individual folder, students can build up their bank of vocabulary and use their own «personal dictionary» of words. Print the templates out or create digital templates (hard-copies can be motivating as students see their work build up).

LK20 Core curriculum

The dialogue between teacher and pupils, and between the school and the home, must be based on mutual respect. When the voices of the pupils are heard in school, they will experience how they can make their own considered decisions. Such experiences have a value in the here and now, and prepare the pupils for becoming responsible citizens in society.

LK 20 English curriculum

Core element

Explore and describe some linguistic similarities and differences between English and other languages the pupil is familiar with and use this in one's own language learning

    Basic skills

    Writing

The English Portfolio gives teachers an insight to the experience in and the level of English proficiency the students have. The vocabulary worksheets allow the students to actively focus on vocabulary.

    Reading

Students read the work they have done with the different templates.

    Digital

Students search the internet to find the correct translations for the English phrases. This provides an opportunity to critically look at the accuracy of digital translations.

    Competence aims for vg1

    • use appropriate strategies for language learning, text creation and communication
    • use knowledge of similarities between English and other languages with which the pupil is familiar in language learning
    • use pronunciation patterns in communication

    Learning objectives

    The pupils(s) shall

    • be able to learn basic phrases in languages other than their own
    • be aware of their own and other languages in the classroom
    • be able to track their own progression of English learning
    • be able to make a language learning plan to keep motivated
    • be responsible for their own progress

    Resources

The templates below are «living» worksheets to be used throughout the school year.

    • Template 1- English Portfolio
Students track their experience of English by answering questions about their English language learning. Students are encouraged to use all the languages they know and/or digital translations. Their answers can be used a basis for a conversation about their English language learning needs and goals.
    • Template 2 - Vocabulary Word Banks
Students  create their own vocabulary word banks as they work in class. These templates are the support for working with the language and as a support for writing and oral tasks.
    • Template 3 - Motivation Plan
Together with the teacher, students highlight the language learning they wish to focus on. It is important that the students make the decisions, and the teacher is there to guide them and make sure they try to achieve their goals.
    • Template 4 - Circle Drawings - Future Plan
      • Students draw 2 circles side by side. Name the first circle NOW, and the second circle Where I want to be. Students write words or draw pictures of where they are now in their lives in the first circle.
      • Students then write/draw where they want to be in the future in circle 2.
      • Students draw an object to connect the two circles (bridge, ladder...).
      • On the connecting object, students write what they need to do to reach their goals.
      • Students and teachers can use the drawings to discuss and reflect on how the students plan to reach their goals. These drawings can be used with the students' motivation planner.
