SEA MATTERS: A Performance Research Pedagogy Laboratory.

Vis sammendrag
SEA MATTERS is a performance research and pedagogical laboratory grounded in shared transatlantic storytelling, artistic action, and listening practices between Østfold University College and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The project fosters student-led inquiry into artistic and pedagogical propositions that operate across national and epistemic borders where ecology, social justice, and performance intersect. Its thematic focus emerges from the entangled transatlantic histories that continue to shape both national contexts.
Positioning Fredrikstad and Rio de Janeiro as critical research sites, SEA MATTERS interrogates settler presence on Indigenous lands, the enduring legacies of the transatlantic slave trade along Atlantic shorelines, and their relation to contemporary ecological crises. Between 2023 and 2026, the project develops a constellation of activities including dialogical encounters, artistic projects, public sharings, workshops, speculative curriculum design, residencies, and the creation of an online archive organized around the thematic frame of “sea matters.”
Through these processes, participating students and researchers generate and circulate critical learning methodologies intended for transmission to future generations via digital archives and radical bibliographic practices. The collaborative digital archive—making pedagogical and artistic materials accessible to partner institutions and broader publics—functions as a central infrastructural and conceptual component of the project.
SEA MATTERS also emphasizes local grounding. Each partner institution works in close dialogue with community collaborators: in Rio de Janeiro, with MUDA and Casa de Candomblé Ilê Axé Egi Omim; and in Fredrikstad, with Østfold International Theatre. Artists, researchers, and citizens beyond the immediate project framework contribute at multiple phases. Overall, SEA MATTERS documents and activates stories of human and other-than-human cohabitation while developing archival practices that incorporate situated community feedback into its evolving pedagogical ecology.
