Module: Research ethics and supervisor-supervisee relationship

Be it at undergraduate, graduate or post graduate level, research supervision is a reflective practice that must be performed following certain codes of ethics that every supervisor must master theoretically and implement practically. This module discusses the codes of ethics and integrity, the main roles of supervisor and supervisee, forms of supervisor-supervisee relationship, the significance of establishing the contract from the start and the art/approaches of feedback within supervision. With problem-based activities (dilemmas), there is room for practical engagement.

Learning outcomes description

At the end of the module, participants are expected to:

  • Identify and discuss the ethics of research supervision in higher education
  • Critically reflect on the main roles of supervisor and supervisee
  • Compare the forms of supervisor-supervisee relationship
  • Identify and handle research supervision misconduct

Learning activities

There will be two physical meetings in Halden campus and one webinar. Each meeting will last for four hours.

A reflection essay

The attendance of the meetings and the peruse of the assigned readings will surely help in the preparation of the critical reflection essay that could be either reflective or reflexive. A reflective essay critically discusses a specific theme or idea based on the knowledge obtained from readings. A reflexive essay critically discusses a specific theme or idea on the basis of one’s own experience. Each essay should include a minimum of 1000 words, using Times New Roman, single space and font 12. More words are welcome. The essay should be submitted after two weeks of ending the module. Constructive feedback will be given on the essays.

The module supervisors will provide several themes/topics to select from for the reflection essay development. However, the participants are free to develop the reflection essay on their own, taking into consideration the purpose of the module.

Assessment

In order to obtain a “pass” grade with a certificate from the centre, the following is required:

  • Attend at least two of the three meetings and participate actively in the discussions.
  • Submit the reflection essay and receive a “pass”.
